Hey yall, hope someone can help me with this one, when i try to go into Windows Firewall, it says tha followin message:

Windows Firewall settings cannot be displayed bevaused the associated service is not running. Do you want to start the Windows Firewall/Internet Connection sharing (ICS) Service?

When i click Yes, it says:

Windows cannot start the Windows Firewall/Internet Connection (ICS) service.

Anyone know how to sort this out?

Thanks.

I believe this problem can be solved by going to

Start>Run> cmd [enter] and type

netsh winsock reset [enter]

Follow prompts and reboot.

No offense to yourself, but windows firewall is worthless, I have talked to many hackers and they say they can get by it in 15-20 minutes. I would get something like ZoneAlarm free firewall, saves you the trouble of worrying, and it's simple to use.

yeh, i dont use it, i jus need to find out bout it cuz i have a problem with my Azureus.

Reset the Winsock.
> Go to the command prompt.
> Type the command "Netsh winsock reset" (without the quotes), and press <enter>.

(This won’t take effect until after you re-boot in step 4.)

2) Make sure the ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) service is set to start automatically.
> Go to the Control Panel.
> Double-click “Administrative Tools”.
> Double-click “Services”.
> Scroll to the bottom of the list; double-click “Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS)”

3) Make sure the Startup type is set to Automatic.
> Click Apply, if needed.
> Click OK.
4) Restart your system.
5) Your firewall should now be up.

yup, windows wirewall is crap, either use zonealarm or Filseclab, i use to use zone but i had alot of issues on some applications, also its pretty bulky app, so you might want to consider Filseclab, although the interface is pretty ugly looking, it does the job, ;)

Don't listen to these guys. Windows Firewall is actually all you really need. The TRUE hacker (not these little script kiddie brats) has to find you first. Good luck.

Most "hackers" that these guys talk about aren't true hackers at all, either. They're what's called "script kiddies". They haven't got the foggiest idea how to hack a computer. They download tools from websites and try and run them. When they don't work on one machine, they move on to the next.

Typically they rely on a program already being installed on your side that opens up a doorway. Then they use a program from the other side to open up a tunnel and they're in. They then steal your identity to attack others. Most of these little brats, that really aren't worth the title "hacker" and very little more than a good sound spanking, don't know the meaning of the word hacker. They think if they are cute and use a few numbers in their name that they are "1337" or "elite".. What a joke.

The other thing these little teenage punks do is build websites that advertise free stuff like cracks and warez. You know, those idiotic websites that every time you click a link it says you must accept this program to access the warez, or click this link, this link and this one to unlock the program? Or you click a link and it spawns yet ANOTHER wannabe site? I have one I use for testing security programs and testing my work on other computers. Every single page has at least one, if not two, programs that try and install themselves, no matter if you use Opera, Firefox or IE. It's a bugger of a site. But that's what they're doing. They're trying to install programs that will open a door on your computer so that these little kiddies can use their little programs on you.

So don't sweat it. Zone Alarm is nothing more than a pain in the ass. A REAL hacker can get through that in about 5 minutes. What you want, rather, is Avast! to keep those nasty bastard programs from downloading automatically from obnoxious websites, Prevx1 to monitor anything and everything that is trying to run or install, and something to monitor your registry wouldn't hurt either if you feel so inclined. Spybot is good for that.

With that in place, you won't have much to worry about.

Let's sum part of it up this way. If someone tells you they're a hacker, they aren't.

I would like to reply to this in the nicest way possible, and here it is. WHAT THE HELL?!?!?! Ok, very simply, a firewall like Zonealarm blocks OUTGOING programs from accessing the internet. So you download some little smiley central or somthing, and it wants to call home to start downloading more stuff or send your information to its central server, it can't because the firewall will block it. Windows firewall does not monitor outgoing data, only incoming, so, running a firewall like Zonealarm is a great idea!

It's not, and I'll point out the flaw in your thinking. The only thing Zone Alarm blocks is LEGITIMATE communications. Why? Because these programs are smarter than that. They piggy back on legitimate apps on ports 80, 8080 and the like. Zone Alarm never knows what hit it.

The ones that don't disguise themselves as legitimate communications so that the unsuspecting user allows the communication anyways.

Trust me. People are deluded into thinking that Zone Alarm is doing them some big favor. It's not. The only thing it's doing is giving them a false sense of security. There is no substitute for using your head for something besides a hat rack. lmao. :D

I couldn't agree with you more there, but I still think it is a good idea to run a more advanced firewall than the windows firewall. That's just my opinion.

Well, I'll tell you the solution I have in place. I have a linux firewall running, Smoothwall in fact. From there it goes to a NAT. From there to the server that's running Panda BusinesSecure with TruPrevent technologies and NetworkSecure. It distributes clients to the other servers and workstations and monitors for everything. I don't worry about these dirty little apps, because they never get on the computer to begin with. I don't even use the Windows Firewall.

Well, I must say that you don't have much concern about little things like that, lol. Anyways, yeah, I run Norton Internet Security and my router firewall. It works well enough for me....

No, I don't. Funny thing is that with all the porn surfing I do, and snooping around in security websites, you'd think my computer would be infested. I just did a complete checkup on all the systems a couple of days ago and all I found were a bunch of cookies. I'd say that's pretty impressive.

at work there are firewalls between the lan and the wan and all the computer that are using xp has windows firewall turned off because they cause problems with network scanners.

at home I just use my linksys router with embedded firewall (dd-wrt firmware upgrade) and NAT. I don't use software firewalls at home, they just take up resources and annoy me.

Oh, and I never get spyware or viruses, haven't had a virus since the year 2000 - seriously!
