Windows Home Server

I am planning on building a server. I have 7-8, 1 TB SATA drives that I want to raid 5/6 with an 8 channel raid card. I am thinking about installing Windows Home Server on a Velociraptor. Now can I also install other programs to using on this server, like Photoshop or Microsoft Office? Can the other computers accessing the server using these programs as well or just the server computer?

I just started reading into servers and am kind of lost.

I might be wrong, but programs like that are required to be installed on the client computer. The only way around this would be to install on the server and then remote desktop in to the WHS. Im sure this would only work for 1 account at a time though.

If you just install photoshop (for example) onto the server other pc's on the network will not be able to run it. The only way you could set this up is A) if the other pc's don't log in locally to their computers and instead log onto the server. OR B) by using a remote desktop connection to the server and just save their work to a network address.

So does WHS function like any other OS with installing programs or is it stripped down to only function with file share/storage? I plan on using the same computer as a desktop and having the raid storage attached. Am I going about this all wrong?

WHS is meant to be a standalone headless computer that you use as File Storage, Backup, Video/Audio streaming, and Remote Desktop in to your local network if you are away. It can be used in different roles, however, it will be difficult and not really recommended.

You can do that with citrix... You turn this server into a termainal server setup citirx xendesktop on it and allow people to get on the desktops and bingo you have it... did this at my previous job and techincally its not illegal if the license does not actually state not for use on terminal server so always read carefully!

provided the info: you'd be better served by installing an OS then WHS in a VM

If your dropping $$$ go for raid 6
