windows instal/boot failures

Hi,

Im trying to fix a family member's computer. When booting the computer, it reads that windows failed to boot and asks to do a repair tool or start normal.

Either one I hit shuts down the computer within a few seconds.

I am able to start the xp install. It copies the files and now starts the actual installation. During the driver install the computer shuts off without warning.

1. I tried it was a different power supply and it has the same problem.

2. I have tried it was a different hdd and it says windows failed to boot (that hdd worked on the other computer)

3. I have applied heatsink to see if it was a overheating problem, doesnt help


Im thinking its a motherboard problem, cant explain why but it just seems like the only possibility

Ram? Not sure how ram could affect that

The computer totally shutting off usually means its overheating. If the computer reboots then thats a different issue. Upon startup, start pressing the f8 key to access safe mode options and choose disable automatic restart on error. The next time it reboots you will get a blue screen with a code on it, we need to know what the code is.
 
while trying to hit f8, it will not bring up those options.

I am able to access the bios or boot disk priority choice (f10)

Am i able to enable this via bios?
 
Nope, you must use the f8 key. However, if you are able to get into windows, you can change the option there as well.
 
na i wasnt able to get into windows nor am i able to download it.

I had it shutoff through the install and went into the bio to check the temps and found the CPU Tcontrol reading 47C

So idk if thats an overheating.

I couldnt find my heat sink liquid so i put vasaline for now to see if it was a overheating problem.
 
You don't use vaseline as a thermal compound. Take the computer to a repair shop and have them figure out your issue.
 
yes i know I dont use it for thermal compound but I used it for a temporary replacement to see if it was a overheating problem.

it was a substitute for the time being since there was little to no thermal compound of it before.

either way, its most likely the motherboard
