windows installer error

Ok guys my friends computer has a glitch or a problem in it. The thing is every time i click anything type of program or shortcut a box, saying windows installer opens, and quickly goes away it repeatedly pops up even if you dont hit cancel it comes then leaves again, please help!!

Is this being seen on an XP system? The problem could be the result of a registry problem or need to upgrade a newer MSI package. You may need to download the Windows installer cleanup utility if something is lingering like a recent program installed or failed update.

There are several common causes addressed in the MS article seen at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555175 If XP is the version of Windows and the recovery or installation disk is onhand you can also try running the system file checker with the disk in the drive. Simply type "sfc /scannow" in the Start>Run command line.
