Windows Installer

When i try in to uninstall windows live messenger from add/remove programs an error comes up saying that there is a problem with windows installer. What should I do?

If it is active from being included on the startup group you can use two methods to shut it down. The quick way is to press the ctrl-alt-del buttons together or right click on the task bar to bring up the task manager. You would highlight the items seen there for messenger and press the end process button.

A second option is restart the system in safe mode to insure that only the basics are running and try there for removal. The third and often needed method is to type in "msconfig" at the Run prompt off of the Start menu and uncheck the messenger listings there and in the services tab which insures after a restart that no part loads up. These are three immediate ideas to go with to remove the service completely.

Well the problem is i cant install the new version becuase it says corrupted file so I wanted to uninstall this and then re install it.

If that was a download it may be incomplete or somehow corrupted once on the drive. Are you trying to upgrade messenger to Windows Live TM Messenger 8.0? You can easily download another copy at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...37-f153-4081-86e9-0cbb2fece05f&DisplayLang=en
The MS article is one to look over for manually upgrading along with the security updates that Microssoft recommends to be installed first. http://www.microsoft.com/security/incident/im.mspx

A few links at MSDN seem to point that Windows Live Messenger should automatically remove the older version? Fortunately there is always a way of removing things from Windows. http://messenger.jonathankay.com/problem.aspx?ID=7

Ok I downloaded the new version from the link you gave me and when it starts installing it says error code 1601 please downlad the newest version from our website.

The error message seen there is an installer error. That same code is often seen with MS Office products as well. Unfortunately the only way to get any real info on the beta version you are trying to get working is to submit a request for help at http://support.live.com/default.aspx But you have to already have an existing account or would have to create a new one. This is the main problem trying to run betas when they are first new. No one knows a good deal about them until the problems come up. When first going with the new beta version of IE 7.0 one file was lost making it impossible to remove after. Apparently you will have to get the current version removed in order for the installer to let the newer version go on. Also disable any firewall(MS or any others) that is active and antivirus programs too. Those are the things often overlooked but can hamper installations of various software types as well as the update for WLM there.

Thanks for all your help. I went to the link you posted above and filled out a form. I will post if the problem continues or is fixed.

Hopefully they'll give you the details to get either the update or earlier version going for you without a hassle there. You will have to follow any instructions carefully to get the best results. Let's see what they say here.
