When is this os coming out? Are there any specs on it yet?
And why would they call it longhorn of all names? LOL

Longhorn is the code name, it will change when released. (e.i. "Ciaro" was the code name for Windows 2000)

Target release date is sometime 2006. Longhorn is the just the code name used for it, like CPU cores have code names (Prescott, Clawhammer, Newcastle, etc). Weather Longhorn will be attached to the release name I don't know

I have a BETA version of longhorn. Doesnt matter iof its legal or not.... It's bloody amazing. Graphics are all rendered in vectors, clean, crisp. The sidebar is amazing. The comm tools are pretty impressive, it has built in chat features which integrate with all windows.

Built in driver pool is massive and supports pretty much anything (seriously, if you thought XP was good this will blow you away).

Boot-up time is reduced astronomically, i installed on the system stated below and it booted in around 6 seconds.

And all this from just a BETA version, i am eagerly awaiting the full release. I will be there at the door of PC World on its arrival........ :-)

errr, well actually it matter quite a lot

but i thought you were gettting boot times of 7 seconds for xp, so really this is not much of an impovement for you

chat features which integrate with all windows.
i cant think of anything worse, if i want to chat i will call someone or come here :D

The sidebar is amazing
The sidebar does look good i have to admit, but its nothing i cant get with ther 3rd party software

Built in driver pool is massive and supports pretty much anything
Relatively no more than xp did on release, however Longhorn will not support unsigned drivers anymore :(

i haven't really stayed upto date with the more technical issues. Did they rethink there descision of relience on NTFS, won't this pose compatibility issue with reading win drives in linux.

there is also a huge vidoe graphics requirement, at 128mb (64mb basic) which means old systems (especially Kim, my old kitchen server) will be of no use. And the memory footprint is equal to that. Not a prob for most modern computers but still to much to poor old Kim :(

The new Longhorn base OS used for installation does look very good however, estimated an unassisted 15 install time.

I will be there at the door of PC World on its arrival
Not me, but heck at least that way you'll get a legal copy:D

On the BETA i've got it's still NTFS but that doesnt mean they're not going to change the file system right at the end. And about the boot times, i was kinda talking to you lot as a whole andnot really about me seeing as i seem to have done something which has made my PC boot up fairly quickly. But, yes, longhorn is pretty damn fast.

the first major problem withthe longhorn is in the file system, the current security in the NTFS is better than that in the WinFS (WINdows Future Storage). but the windows are currently working on this.

WinFS (dispite its name) is not really a file systems, more a db that sits on a NTFS file system

You dont, its not released for testing yet, only to microsoft developers. I got my copy from a not to legal source but hey, im sure everyone's done it at some point.

Why do you have firefox on that machine? Did it come w/ LH (Why would microsoft do that?), or was it kept installed when you updated from XP or something else, or did you just install it and see what happened?
