Windows Mail

Dp you have Windows Messanger active or download any newsgroups in the options for the new OE? With Vista here no icon is ever seen in the system tray.

Nope neither. yes, it is an envelope with a yellow asterisk in the top left corner. When i open up windows mail, yes the outlook replacement, they appear to be the same, and if i have a new email it appears near the clock but doesnt go away for like 3 hrs, even if i delete or close out mail.

Are you talking about the clock on the new sidebar or on the Start bar? After deleting an email try closing out the sidebar and restarting it if that's where you are seeing this. That should see that refreshed like you would a web page.

Nope, its on the taskbar or start bar, which ever you prefer. Shows up next to the running programs in that cluster next to the clock, and it doesnt go away right away. I dont even keep the mail program open either, i open it, receive my mail and close it, yet it stays there. its more of an annoyance than an inconvenience.

When you run windows mail, it doesn't close when you press the 'X' in the top right corner, it minimizes to the system tray. To exit it you have to right click on the mail icon there and pick exit (might be able to exit via the file menu as well).

I hide all icons on the task bar by simply right clicking on an open area of the task bar itself to bring up the properties menu and then click on the "notification area" tab. From there you simply click the customize button and click the dropdown list on the right side of each item to choose from the always show, hide when inactive, or always hide options there.

XP has a registry value you can change from 1 to 0 or create for disabling the new mail notification. So far there's not too many registry tweaks found for this since Vista is the latest Microsoft bird to ruffle it's feathers in the last six weeks. Here's a screen capture to look over for this.

I run both here without even seeing the email notification come up. But that may have something to do with the new spam filter seen in OE. Mail you don't see in your inbox is still tripping the notifier about new mail. Of course that's the kind of mail you don't want and have to keep blocking senders as well as hitting the delete options.
