Windows Me and virus removal

I was having problems with errors on my desktop, these I suspected were due to virus, so much so that I decide to relegate it for basic non-internet use. I run Windows Me on this machine which microsoft doesn't support now, I suspect that this may be a reason for the virus; and Norton AV. I'd like to run an anti-virus programme on this PC but the free ones like avg etc., don't support the older operating system Me.
There is a message at the start of the boot up which flashes too quick to read, it's only recently appeared and is in greek type letters, I suspect this is the virus signature, I could take a photo but it would only identify the virus.
Any ideas from anyone other than reformatting the drive?

Regards

Try running Malwarebyte and see what you can get. It should be compatible with ME. If you do have to re-install in the end you should really think about upgrading to XP.

This brings up a message that NT is required and doesn't load. I have a Dell laptop with windows XP but the disk recovery doesn't allow installation on another PC. I'll just keep the old PC offline as I require it for older hardware and software. My new PC runs on Vista so I work with 3 different systems now.
