Windows Media Player auto starts at bootup (infected by virus?)

I'm using Windows XP Pro.

I'm not sure if there's a virus or something in my computer. My Windows Media Player is acting weird. Everytime I bootup my computer, it automatically starts.

:confused: I checked the Programs > Startup. Nothing was there.

:confused: I checked the "msconfig", realized WMP was checked. So I unchecked it. Bootup the computer again, WMP still auto opens itself.

:confused: I did the virus scan (with McAfee's latest DAT file updated), no virus found.

:confused: I did the Spybot scan. Nothing was found.

Can anyone help?
 
Try having a search around microsoft.com for ay updates and patches. make sure you have WMP 10 installed. A lot of bugs and errors have been fixed in there.
 
Check your registry for it aswell... look in all of the start-up entries ".../Software/Microsoft/Windows/Current_Version/Run" then delete it from there.
 
Oh.. did you do an "Imunise" in Spybot? if not then do it and also enable Spybot's "TeaTimer". To do so, open Sypbot and go into advanced mode, then select "Resident" from the "Tools" Menu. Then from the same menu select "System Start-up" and "un-tick" any Windows Media entries.

Run Hijackthis. Check these entries.

Reboot to safemode. Find and delete this file.

You folks are the best !!! My computer is now back to where it was, i.e., normal. One thing I don't understand though, how did this whole Windows Media Player auto start thing happen in the first place? Was it caused by some sort of virus?

It was probably caused by the svhost.exe, as deleting that seemed to solve the problem. I'm not sure why WMP gets affected, I once saw a case where ANYTHING they clicked opened WMP. Anyway, glad to help.
