Windows Media Player - Bandwidth problem

A friend of mine is having problems with his Windows Media Player. After installing WMP11, his bandwidth was 3500. After a while it dropped down to 1500. He is wondering how he can change it to be 3500 again or at least why his bandwidth dropped.

Is this an actual problem or is this normal? I'm not very familiar with bandwidth and kinda short on time since school started. If it is a problem, is there anything he can do about it?

I can't tell you how to correct the error since WMP 11 is still a beta version in development. When tried out here there were too many problems seen and it was swifty removed for WMP 10. That has proven itself as stable here. That would be the recommendation until the final version is released unless someone else has a working tip for you.

That was his first thought too but he had a problem downgrading. What are the steps he would need to take to go from WMP11 to 10?

If I am not mistaken, he just has to uninstal it from the computer. To do this, he has to go to: Start, Control Pannel, Add or Remove programs. Then he just selects Windows Media Player 11 and it should automatically bring it back to Windows Media Player 10. The only thing though, it might take time to bring it back to Windows Media player 10.

Sounds great, thanks. I'll let him know to downgrade and to uninstall it from the control panel. I think he said he tried that and it didn't work but considering he is 70+ years old and basically doesn't speak a word of english, he may have gotten a popup with a message that he couldn't read and clicked a random button. I'll help him when I get a break from the tons of homework I have to do.

Thanks for the advice

When removing WMP 11 totally you will be brought back to WMP 9 which comes default with XP. If 9 isn't seen at all that will work out better with the fresh copy of WMP 10 being downloaded and installed directly. Tell your friend to first create a folder for storing updates like this and save 10 there first. Don't choose to save it on the desktop. That's a waste of time there.

Once WMP is totally removed the updated WMP 10 will install clean and save a lot of time and hassles. This is why I recommended 10 and removing the beta. WMP 11 beta is far more geared for Vista and that will see a big difference in OSs there. At the moment I have a beta copy just downloaded on a second drive temporaliy to compare the differences seen.

The advise here is the total removal in WMP 11 by going into the "add/remove Windows components" section on the left side by first going into the Control Panel and double clicking on the "add/remove" icon found there. Once that screen opens look over to the left to find the button for Windows components. You simply remove the check on the WMP there and that will start to remove the player right there. Have an XP install cd onhand in case that is asked for.

Thanks, that should make things a lot easier. I think he said he removed the WMP11 from Add/Remove but couldn't install 10 because it complained that 11 was still installed. It should easily remove it if I try it from the Windows Components.

Thanks

Make sure the fresh copy of WMP 10 is onhand there and adivse the removal of WMP 11 by that method. I got stung earlier when trying it out. If there are still any problems seen after this a look in the system registry for any values directly involving WMP(any version) would have to be removed.

One other thing is to try restarting the system before going to install WMP 10. That will insure that 11 has already been unloaded. This may be why that message was seen. Using the msconfig utility and start menu add/remove in settings to remove and disable any listings in those two will help.
