Windows Media Player Issue

So when I go to play a DVD on my computer, I use Windows Media Player, mainly because thats all I have and I am too lazy to download any other program. I have a problem with a couple of my DVDs. I just put a brand spanking new one in my DVD drive, and the video plays just fine, but there is no sound. Does anyone hae any suggestions as to how to fix this, or any suggestions for a better media player that will play DVDs for free?
 
WMP won't run too many dvds as well as the newer wide screen formats seen due to not having either needed codecs included or not handling the type of format the video and sound files alike are broken down into only to be reassembled by the player that will run them. This is one of the main drawbacks where Micrsoft now has included more multimedia tools in Windows like Photoshop, MovieMaker, and some other items. Most of that is geared for home movies and digital camera snaps for home uses while playing a rented movie needs another player altogether. There were a few freewares you could download about a year ago that would play vcds as well as dvds like SuperDVD Player. Otherwise you will have to buy a player like Cyberlink's PowerDVD to watch them.
 
WMP will play mpeg IIs, avi files, and a list of others that generally have been let's say home made with a camcorder or similar. When you play an mp3 or wma file from the media library you get to look at a nice screen saver running. But it's not anywhere close to good player for commercially produced products like a rented movie due to the lack of design for that. Essentially it's a freebie thrown in to give something extra besides a colorful desktop GUI when outside the business environment.
 
take a look at zoom player as well, you can get it from download.com. If your the kinda person who likes to fine tune all aspects of your media viewing, then zoom player is the media player for you. It also has an option to search for any codecs or plugins for media types that are not yet compatible with your system, everything from OGM to new weird stuff that's coming out.
 
I tried VLC and never got it working right after three weeks. I gave up and bought PowerDVD 6.0 online for $10. Worth every nickel.

I still 4.0 here on XP without issues. So hearing that is no surprise. But there are a number of good shareware as well as freeware players out there depending your preferences as well. SuperDVD whatever was one that was raved about a few years back as a good freeware. But a look over at sites like download.com, tucows.com. geocities.com, and some other sites can usually locate a good player for what you need. 6.0 for $10-? send me a link for that site. I'd love to upgrade this one. :D
 
That's a good site to look over! I spent $100- for Roxio's Easy Media CD Creator 8.0 over a year ago to burn Linux iso images for dvd and cd alike! NERO and PowerDVD alike are both great softwares at good prices there.
 
I'll censor it here too! DeepBurner is a freeware you can try out in the meantime for dvds. There are plenty of freeware and shareware wav, mp3, and other type audio file editors when you run a few searches. W.Media Player 10 will take cds and save the tracks as mp3s as well as the usual wma type files which was good news for a change. I did like the ease when using Easy Media Creator 8.0 for Linux iso burns. But even with it totally disabled in the msconfig utility that @^$@! TDriver.exe kept coming up without even running the program at other times!
