Windows Media Player Won't Play After XP Reinstall...

I’ve recently had to reinstall windows xp and along with that was the reinstallation of windows media player 10. Well, I’ve got approximately 100 Gig of music on a separate hard drive. I used windows media player to rip it all to the hard drive. Now, with everything reinstalled, some of it plays but most of it doesn't. I can’t get it to play even half of my music. Any suggestions? Do I just need to delete the file and re-rip 1500 CDs? I hope not.

what happens when you do try?

It could be a codec problem...so you could try downloading the proper codecs....

You might also try re-installing wmp 10...sounds like codecs though.

That's what I thought at first, but I don't get any codecs errors and I've tried re-installing and even going back to Windows Media Player 9. Either way, when you re-install WMP 10, it comes with the latest codecs versions.

After a lot of fcuking with it, I've found that it has to do with the licensing of the music. On some of the later albums (2006 and a few 2005 with anti-piracy software), I've had to just re-install the whole album. On others, the only thing that comes up is the name of the track. I've gone in and used the "advance tag editor" to name the artist and album. Then, WMP uses the internet to find the rest of the information.

It's all kind of a pain in the a$$, but I've learned to back up my licenses and to copy all licenses to the same hard drive that my music is on. That way, if I ever have to re-install XP, I won't have to go through this again.
