i have 1.5gb of ram. windows xp never uses more than a gigabyte of it. it is able to use it though but i had to open world of warcraft 6 times and windows still left 300mb of ram free. also i turned off all my pagefile but there is about 1.4gb of pagefile can't be turned off. if i turn on 1gb of pagefile then i have 2.4gb, etc. my main problem though is how can i get windows to use all my ram?

Why would you want windows to use all of it?

Also i believe (not sure though) that once it does you get a BSOD.

I dont see why you would want windows to utilize all of it. Thats the point you need enough that you will never utilize all of it.

my friend's laptop is vista and when he plays a game with high specs nearly all the ram is used up. the downside is that the game minimizes slowly. still i would take that over having a lot of ram free but poor performance in the game. are there programs that replace windows xp's memory software and let the user control how memory is used?

A running game is in RAM, you shouldn't be losing any performance to paging. Only unused things get paged unless you are very short on RAM. Vista caches a lot more things which is why your friends machine appears to be using more RAM.

i usually have 250mb of pagefile used and 1200mb of ram free when no extra programs are open. when world of warcraft is running i generally have around 700mb of pagefile used and 600mb of ram free. is this normal?
