my sony laptop died so I took the hard drive out and put it into an older sony laptop my son gave me...my laptop had windows 7 that had upgraded to win 10...the older laptop had windows vista...my newer laptop had worn off the windows product id on the bottom...the old one with vista still has the windows id on bottom....cannot get it to work...cannot get windows activated....any ideals?

Vista was not an upgradeable product for Windows 10. You will not be able to activate Windows 10 using the Vista product number. You will either have to purchase a new Windows 10 product number or do your best to read the Windows 7 product number on the newer computer. Windows 7 is a legitimate product to upgrade to Windows 10 so if you can read that product number that should activate. Having said that a computer that had Vista on it might not be suitable to run Windows 10 and you could well have problems activating Windows 10 even if you can read the Windows 7 product number because the computer is radically different from the original Windows 7 computer. .

You cannot take the HHD with OS from one system and put it into another system. You may have some luck if the other system is identical to the original.
The HHD has configuration of the original system which is not compatible to the one you're trying to use it in. It has nothing to do with whatever OS you had with the old system.

the laptop is actually working better than it was with the newer hard drive....just asking that it wants me to activate windows

If the two computers have similar hardware configuration, you may be able to get away with it.
Usually, different computer has different hardware and drivers. The HD has different hardware in the registry. That spells trouble.
