hey all, my brother has got a problem with his pc. (dell dimension8400) with windows XP Home Edition SP2.

when he turns it on he gets the blue screen of death telling him theres something wrong wiht windows (Stop 0x0000007B error). i have tried safe mode, doesnt work :(.
i dont wanna format it as he has some coursework on there, which he forgot to back up (Idiot!). i have tried using the OS repair thingy from the windows disc, but i need the administraitor password and i dont have a clue what it is, i think its still the default. i have also run a HDD test and thats fine.

any ideas on how to fix it? (without reformatting if poss)
whats the default windows admin password?

thanks,

One thing i can suggest, Is to get your hands on another hard drive

Set the Jumpers of NEW Hard Drive too Master.

Install windows onto the NEW hard drive

Set the jumpers of OLD Hard Drive to Slave.

Remove what you want/need from OLD hard drive onto NEW hard drive

Reformat OLD hard drive now that you have the things you need.

IF you don't want to do that.

Remove All RAM

Blow off slots

Re-insert one stick at a time

If first stick still gives same problem, Take that out, Replace with another stick removed from system and so on.

If first stick works, Insert other sticks one at a time to find the Faulty one.

BSOD's are MOST caused by Ram in my own personal Experience.

If no good, Put all ram back in.

Take out any cards you don't need so computer is only booting off

CPU, Hard Drive, Ram, And Graphics card (assuming you don't have a Integrated slot)

If this works, Repost, and ill tell what to do when my fingers don't hurt so bad..

its not got much to do with the hardware of the computer, if you google the error code you will find its casued by a virus or other software problems...

forgot to mention that.

It could also be a memory issue, i used to get BSODs when my memory was buggered, im going to suggest you use Memtest86+.

Run it for about an hour on each stick of memory he has and see what it comes up with.

Fixed it :D

it was something to do with having both a Sata and a Pata (IDE) HDD attached, it was fine for months before yesterday, but then it decided it didnt like it.

all i did was going into system setup on startup and change the HDD setup to "Combination" and it booted fine :D
