Typically, this is caused by a RAM issue, but I've seen it come about in a few cases by corrupted drivers due to a virus. The first test would be to boot your PC in Safe Mode. If it doesn't crash, it's not a hardware issue and would need a good full system scan run by your favorite AV software (I prefer Microsoft Security Essentials). If it still crashes, you'll want to look at your RAM first. Try running with only one stick installed (if you have more than one) and also try reinstalling the RAM. Chip Creep is more common than you might think. Cheers.

Long time ago I had problems related to that file, (Hal.dll). Wound up using ERD to recopy the file into its correct location on my boot drive. Seem to recall that fixed it. i.e. hal.dll is a critcal OS file, and if corrupt no boot as best I recall.

To make it clearer, HAL.DLL is essential for XP to boot. If that file is corrupted then you get an error message pertaining to it and no boot. Solution is to delete the damaged copy of it and paste in a new undamaged copy. "ERD" is "Emergency Rescue Disk Commander", which is an extremely stripped down version of WinXP which runs from a CDROM drive.

Assuming you don't have something like that which will allow you to access all your files when Windopes won't boot, then I would suggest :

1) Carefully remove your Boot HDD from your machine.
2) Change the jumper setting on it from master to slave.
3) Install the drive as a slave in a friend's XP machine.
4) Search for hal.dll on your HDD and on finding it delete it.
5) Search for hal.dll on your friend's "C" drive and on finding it copy it to your HDD in the appropriate place.
6) Shut down and remove your drive from your friend's machine.
7) Change the jumper back to master.
8) Reinstall your drive in your own machine, then with everything reconnected, power up and boot.
