Windows shut down...???

OK, I think I'm posting in the right place so I'll start at the start... Notebook has been running faultlessly since I got it a couple of months ago... just now my wife was working on a word document and went to log onto the net to use a thesaurus. The screen went blue and the following message was displayed:

Check to be sure you have adequate disc space. If a driver is identified in the stop message, disable the driver or check with the manufacturer for driver updates. Try changing video adapters.

Check with your hardware vendor for any BIOS updates. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advanced Startup Options, and then select Safe Mode.

What type of computer is it?.. Brand and model...

No, 80GB HDD, 59.9GB free

Not that I can recognise(in my infinite lack of wisdom)

One other thing Trizoy, or whom ever else may be looking in... I loaded Avast anti virus last week, I got a pop-up saying it may not be compatable with Zone Alarm. This also occured on the desktop about 6 weeks ago, I proceeded with the install on the notebook as there had been no ill effects on the desktop. Reformatted desktop(for pre existing reasons), loaded Zone Alarm and Avast, same pop-up, ignored it again and no probs on the desktop so far.

I am not an expert on the whole ram issue, but the same stop error has something to do with ram problems or other information I am reading online. Try another disk, try to get the memory checker working somehow, that would be my next try. Guys any help here? Have you received the bsod more than one time?

I received a bsod once.. dont know what it was, or why it happened. Has not happened again though. Was about 3 months ago. :)

I'm not an expert on anything really, unless you count breaking stuff... I opened the ram compartment, removed and reinstalled it. Restarted the puta in safe mode(not sure why, just seemed like a good idea) and ran the disc cleaner(again, I know it has naf all to do with the ram, just seemed good at the time), restarted in normal mode and so far so good...

If I download the memory checker to the desktop and make a disc, will it work in the notebook?? Or do they configure themselves to the individual computer?

Thanks for your time Trizoy, I'll bring the thread back to life if it happens again or I get the mem checker running & encounter a prob.
 
I dont know if the problem you are havin is with the disk not working or the drive not writing... Try another disk yet?
 
The memory checker should work on multiple computers. You won't have to make one for each individual computer (unless you just feel the need to lol)
 
OK guy's, I downloaded the Memtest86 v3.2ISO image (zip)

I extracted it and saved that to CD. Neither computer will recognise it as a bootable CD. Have I missed something here? I read the destructions and think I did it all correctly, my burning software(Record now) doesn't have a "bootable disc" option. I used to have Nero but lost it when I reformatted the desktop, not sure if Nero had a "bootable disc" option either.

I thought technology was suposed to make life easier...???
 
...Why make a CD? Such a waste. Make a bootable floppy, put the memtest on there, boot from it. Floppies are actually alot better for small apps liek memtest, bcuz' it's more likely to work on a broken computer than a CD would (if you were say, having boot up problems or something.)

Unfortunately no floppy drive on the notebook... guess that puts an end to that idea. I've toasted 6 CD's so far, tried a couple of different mem testers but no joy in either machine. The notebook still hasn't crashed again yet so I guess that's something...
 
I'm quiting for ther night 12:30am here, thanks for your assistance so far guy's...

I'll have another crack tomorrow and let you know. Don't hesitate to post any other thoughts as/if they come to you.
 
Darn, maybe good idea to invest in a USB floppy drive? Would save on wasting CD's.

As i don't have a CD burner myself, or know what your software can do, I can't really help with the bootable CD creation. Hopefully someone can help you though. And hopefully your laptop won't BSOD anymore :)

No more BSOD so far guy's... Let the machine run all night, got up for a leak at about 4am and had a play(with the notebook), got up around 8am and had another play(again, with the notebook), went out until 3:30 then had another play, loaded it up multifunctioning and still no BSOD... You guy's(4W4K3 and Trizoy) are geniuses, you have inadvertantly fixed my problem.
