hello all,

(Point of sales computer failing to start up windows.
Windows XP
windows\system32\config\system missing/corrupt

i was wondering if there was a place i could download this file.

i've tried msft's fix using windows cd, but as soon as i get into the repair screen the computer turns off. i was going to try to replace the file entirely by hooking it up to my home pc. however i dont know where to find the file, and i'm assuming i can't copy my win 7 onto the win xp harddrive.

thanks all!

NO, you can't copy win 7 to the XP drive.

So the machine turns itself off after so long? That would be a totally different issue. If you can get the machine to stay on then perform the procedure here.

Start with resolution B, don't do anything with A.

I think the only way is with the recovery cd that came with the pc,or a fresh install, but that costs money, so my suggestion is to forget win and install a Linux distro and this will cost you nothing, and it will do exact same thing or better then win,at least you don't have to worry about virus and malware.
I had a pc with win xp giving me trouble so i forgot win and installed linux mint 14 mate and it was the best thing i ever did, i do everything with it as i did with win or better , i still have a laptop with win vista and another laptop with xp,and i compare and notice no difference the only difference is that both are slower then the Linux,as soon as any of these laptops start to have problems i forget win and go for Linux no doubt about it.

i have to do windows b/c the pos (point of sale not piece of ****) system only runs on windows.

and once i enter the recover it shuts down, i dont even have time to type

Sounds like its overheating or a possible motherboard/psu issue. You will have to do some diagnosing to determine the cause of the shutdowns. Go into the bios and see if there is a hardware monitor section where it shows cpu temp.

its not a heat problem, i'm using ultimate boot cd for windows and i've had it on for a while now i think the Hdd is going to die soon, but the diagnostics say its ok. ram is fine cpu is clean i've cleaned out everything no dust at all

I've never seen a bad hard drive actually shut a system down, I've seen one stop a system from booting past the post screen though. Might want to try using a different power supply to test. Try resetting cmos as well.
