Windows Update continuesly fails

when i try to perform windows updates i can veiw what i need to upadate but when i click install and click 'continue' as administrator it stops downloading and states
error(s) found:
Code 8024402c Windows Update encountered an unknown error.

ive tried clicking 'get help with this error' and its useless to be honest. i also have the problem of whenever i click a link on google that it opens a new tab in IE7 and redirects me to a google search or some completely random website.
for example i tried http://update.microsoft.com/ and it takes me to http://www.google.com/
i downloaded a spyware program and it found loads of infections and deleted all of them but the problem still persists. so i then downloaded another one and i am currently installing it but am i doing the right thing or am i going about solving this problem all the wrong way?

If anyone could help me i would really appriciate it.

thank you for that sorry that i didnt look at that before but as you can see its my first post and ive been trying to sort this for days now and getting fustrated. the only problem is that it is also blocking the internet to any programs so atm i wont be able to do any updates unless the current scan thats happening fixes it but i will follow the instructions on that link.

No apology needed :) how I replied may have come across wrong. If you can post the two logs I am sure ceewi or someone familiar with reading them will help you. Some anti-malware programs out there are a bit "iffy" and can install malware on your system under the pretence of helping you.

no its just im a member of a biker forum and when i first posted on that they said i should have said something in the newbie section n seemed a lil annoyed so just didnt want to upset anyone but thanks for the help cause im actually talking to u off my computer and it worked. the only wierd thing was is that i was told by a few people that adaware is good and it picked up alot but not the correct spyware aparently so i can only be gratefull for your help,but i dont know how to find the log so i can post it cause it restarted as soon as malware resolved the problem... also (sorry to be a newsense) i do have another slight issue, its a different topic so maybe i should set up a new thread or maybe its already been threaded i dont know, but basicly i have an external harddrive thats 400gb and ive had it years and never failed me, but on my computer now (last couple of days) its saying, when i try to access it through 'My computer', 'windows connot access specific device, path, or file. you may not have the appropriate permission to access the item' but how could this be when i am the only user on this computer, and set as administrator and its my harddrive?? i dont know if you can help me but thought it might be worth a try.
