Windows Update error

I've recently had some spyware on my computer which I now believe to have been removed.

See : http://www.computerforum.com/showthread.php?t=33945

As you can read in the above thread, I now am having problems with Windows update. I have no idea if this problem is related to the original spyware issue or not.

Today, I tried to execute an update in safe mode and I received the following error code : 0x8007043C.

I've done a search here for this code but to no avail. I've done search via Google and have found little. The following reference is similar but offers little help unfortunately.

I'd be grateful if anyone can help me out here as I'd really like to keep my system in order and up to date.

Thanks in advance :)

Just as a side note, if this has something to do with activex and I need to remove and re-install it, how is this done it does not seem to be present in "add and remove programs".

Thanks.

hi

try this
It could be that one or more of the services needed to run this are
stopped/disabled as I had this on a friends pc recently,to check do this:
right mouse on you My computer icon click on "Manage" in the left hand pane
expand the bottom set of programmes and click on "services" carefully look
down the list in the right pane and make sure that these 3 services are
running "Auto Updates","B.I.T.S." service(Background Intelligent Transfer
Service") and "Event logs Service" if one or all are not running just double
click them in turn and in the box that opens select "manual" or "Automatic"
then hit "Start" in the bottom pane then "apply" this should solve your
problem.Hope this helps.TDP.

Hello, thanks for you reply. I've followed your instructions and found that the "Automatic updates" had started as had the "Events log" but unfortunately "B.I.T.S" had not.

I've tried to start it in both manual and automatic mode but unfortunately it does not. In both cases I receive the same message :

" Windows could not start the BITS service on local computer. For more information review the system event log. If this is a non MS service, contact the service vendor and refer to a service specific error code - 2147024894".

I hope this makes more sense to you than me.

Thanks very much.

This seems to help most people.

today I found a message that someone posted and I tried what they
did........it worked !
I opened Run and typed in :
regsvr32 oleaut32.dll
regsvr32 jscript.dll
regsvr32 vbscript.dll
regsvr32 msxml.dll
And in an attempt to fix possible problems with security providers I
also did the following:
regsvr32 softpub.dll
regsvr32 wintrust.dll
regsvr32 initpki.dll
regsvr32 cryptdlg.dll
After that I went to Services and clicked on the BITS and then clicked Start
and it did. I then went to Windows Update and the automatic updates started.

Yes !! followed the above and tried MS update agian - Hey Presto! Twelve critical updates dowloaded and installed Smooth as silk !!

Big thanks to The Reaper and Meanman for helping me sort out these issues.

Cheers.
