I've had that happen to me on a few occasions. It would be a result of a few different things. I've found a way to reduce the risk of it happening after a fresh install of XP, is to install things one at a time and reboot after each time. For example, motherboard chipset drivers first, reboot, sound/LAN drivers, reboot, XP security updates, reboot, SP2, etc. Windows is odd with how it updates itself sometimes and often updates will only work fully after the system integrates them with a restart.

I have gone to the update page and the samthing happen's there as well.. I have thought about contacting Microsoft and asking them what I can do, but I am not going to pay $90.00 U.S just to get an answer to this problem..

When did you do this most recent Install? Is it possible to do another fresh install at some point today or tomorrow and see if it clears up? You're getting the Update Notifications so your internet is connected. Odd indeed.
