Windows Vista Error happening when I try to update

I cannot update to Service Pack 2 or even update my Windows Defender malicious software definitions without getting error codes.

I am using Windows Vista Basic 32-bit Service Pack 1. When I installed Vista I used an upgrade installation disk from Windows XP Home Edition. Any ideas?

I always had issues after a while when upgrading vista. I had to do a repair install and then install service pack 2.

Are you using windows update to get SP2 or are you trying to download it directly from microsofts website?

For some reason I've had problems upgrading clients computers from the original version of vista or sp1, I've always had to download the SP from microsoft's website instead of windows updates.

I downloaded Service Pack 2 directly and tried to install it. It downloaded fine. When I go to do an installation of it I get this error code: 0x800f0823

I get the same problem with Windows Defender. I downloaded it directly then tried to do an install with the update and I just get the previously listed error code.

Try a repair install with your vista disc. you won't lose anything that you've installed, it will just replace anything it finds to be not working properly in vista.

and something in there isn't working because it won't let you update.

Looks like something is corrupted in vista. repair install

I don't know if I want to do a repair install since I am dual-booting with Linux. I think it could mess my hard drive configuration up.

Yes that could easily cause problems...

Maybe you could backup whatever enables you to dual boot with linux, then repair vista, update, and restore dual boot functionality? I don't think a repair install of vista will mess with the linux installation
