Windows Vista or Longhorn

From the looks of your screeny a couple posts back, it looks like a MAC OS :P I've always liked their layout, good to see windows went with something that people like (i.e. widgets and whatnot)

That was the options menu for the new sidebar seen when starting Vista up for the first time there. Notice I mentioned "menu"? It's more like a graphical interface then that by a long shot. The control panel now sees paragraphs of text with a link in each one rather then the typical tile or icon previously seen in XP. You no longer click the apply button when changing desktop backgrounds either. Once you single click on any it appears instantly as the background while XP and previous versions generally see a small preview window before appying.

yeah they are totally widgets, but vista lacks the dashboard feature of OS X that auto hides them, or does it:confused:

There are a lot of rip offs in the UI

Do you mean to dual boot it? I have always had trouble setting up windows xp and another operating system to dual boot. I have also heard from another posting somewhere on "Computer Forum" that people have had a few problems with Vista and XP dual booting. Wouldn't your printer etc. work on vista if you just got the right drivers?

yeah, uh how can you put a second OS on your computer anyway?

Second? I currently have three running now with XP Home on the primary, Vista on the secondary ide, and XP Pro watching over the 500gb sata model recently added. You first have to plan out what OSs you intend to have installed. For two different versions of Windows the oldest version is installed first to be seen and added into the newer version's boot loader. Except for Vista lately :( , two versions can either run on one single hard drive or on two separate drives. Vista failed to install to a second partition at first when XP Pro was formerly on the secondary.

Laptop

I am going into town today to buy a laptop the only problem now is that the only laptops in my price range have windows vista basic on them, I was just wondering if someone could get back to me about whether it is worth it at all to get Windows Vista basic, because I am quite happy to go for Windows XP again on my laptop but unfortunately there aren't many out there now - So my question is: Is Windows Vista Basic worth getting? because it only has 1 extra thing not including the new look that XP doesn't have.

You probably won't want it and realized you made a mistake if you go with that version. The Basic is about as good as using 98 for checking mail and browsing the web. Originally when looking over the different releases the Ultimate was the one in mind. But that was sold out fast! So the next step and still above the Business version is the Home Premium.

The comparison should be looked over before deciding. Out of 16 new features the Basic version has 3, the Business version sees 10, the Home Premium sees 12, and of course the Ultimate sees all 16! http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/windowsvista/editions/choose.mspx

Thanks

Thanks guys, I just thought I would let you know that I went for a laptop with Windows Vista basic and got the academic upgrade for Home Premium so am running my laptop with Windows Vista Home Premium, the only feature I don't have is the aero effect which I am not that worried about!
I agree with PC Eye I would have discovered I made a huge mistake if I hadn't gone with Windows Vista Premium, as I had a look around Windows Vista basic before I changed and it was lacking in most areas - basically a glorified e-mail checker!

Thanks again.
