windows vista Question

ok somebody has brought me a computer with windows vista on it but the problem is i think the hard drive on it is defective so i have to figure out to replace it said something about read error or something so i figured the hard drive needs to be changed so i was wondering since they computer has the windows vista product key on it can i use that to download windows vista if so is this the right link to what i need to download to install a fresh windows vista onto that computer http://www.microsoft.com/windows/do...FamilyID=b0c7136d-5ebb-413b-89c9-cb3d06d12674

i have the product key i just dont know where to go to download the version of vista the product key is for so far it says windows vista home basic but im not sure if its 64 or 32 bit version that i need
 
The link you provided is just the service pack update, not the actual OS. It its an oem computer such as Dell, HP, compaq, gateway, etc.. and you don't have the reinstallation cd's then you need to contact the manufacturer for recovery cd's which they will charge a nominal fee, usually anywhere from 15-25 bucks.
 
oh ok thanks so the product key wont help me get vista then for to install on this computer that i am trying to get working so do i call the manufacturer up will i need proof of anything cuz its not my computer i will have to contact the owner and figure out how to take it from here

and if i call the manufacturer up btw its a compaq how will i be able to pay for the disc that i need would i have to go to pay it online or will it get mailed to me like will i have to send them money order i just want to know the details b4 i try this the first time i had to deal with compaq as far as this situation goes
 
You would only need the model and serial number off the computer and then you would have to pay using a credit card to get the cd mailed to you.

great well i saw a paper on the side of it it had some numbers and letters are those the model or the serial number would they be considered both or would the windows vista product key be apart of what i would need to

i found the model and serial number they are on the very bottom of the tower you guys sure it will not be alot of money or you not sure?
 
whats the name of the disc i have to ask about recovery disc? is that what i need to restore the computer to its original state or after i replace the hard drive if thats the case? cuz i think the site has a tip on how to create a recovery disc but im not sure as to if i have to create one or if i will be forced to buy one
 
What is the make and model of computer? I'll give you the link to order the cd's.
