I have Windows Vista Home Premium, and i have noticed that their is now a SP1 waiting to be installed via windows update, i would like to know how many Vista users have moved up to SP1, and what their views on it are ?

Thanks

I downloaded it as well and I would recommend it. I personally haven't seen a difference, but Microsoft says you see a significant increase in transferring and viewing files over the network, increased power savings, and other misc goodies.

HI,
I just checked Microsoft's Update web site. It says that Vista SP-1 will not be downloaded until mid-April (no specific date). It's getting close unless it is delayed. Are you sure you are not talking about the Candidate version which has been around for a while? Effectively, it is not SP-1. Rather, it is just a work in progress. Understand that it is not the finalized version. As such, you become a Beta tester and will still have to install the final version when it becomes available. It's OK if that's what you want to do.

Personally, I'll wait for the finalized version especially since I'm not having any problems.

I'm having a problem burning after the update. I can burn one DVD and then after that I have to shut down the computer and unplug the drive, plug it back in and restart. It's a royal pain. It took me an hour to burn two backup disks for a client because of that stupidity. I flashed the firmware with the latest version after, so I guess we'll see how it goes in the next few days.

There are quite a few complaints on the web about SP1 and the 680i chipset as well, which I have.

i have it.

theres no reason not to. no one i know has had any problems.

go for it.

There's a few minor annoyances that seem to accompany it however. While installing it you will also see things like device drivers updated and software defaults reset on things like the volume control or audio console for sounds cards as well as seeing the newer versions of drivers put on for different types of hardwares and devices.

On some occasions you might need to see the reinstall of something when the newer drivers won't quite work with the software side as if the two things were tied together. You may have to revert to the driver version found on the software disk.

The only thing noticed here was the sound card's mode and settings were returned to the defaults while some have seen problems with wireless adapters for the most part.

This is why I never run upgrades...

Backstory... After running the installer, my laptop sat at Stage 3 or 3 - 0% for about an hour. I finally reset it to safe mode, and it started installing...go figure. It rebooted, went to stage 3 again and sat there. Went to safe mode, started installing again(longer process, so something else?) This went on for a good 3 hours I guess before it finally showed what I posted above. After that, the laptop wouldn't boot... That coupled with other issues I had with the machine, plus the fact it was within the 90 day return polocy made me decide to simply return it and get another brand. DOWN WITH HP... :o

(that mark on the bottom of the screen is from some Photoshopping, so it's easier to read. And if anyone's wondering, I got a Fujitsu Lifebook A6110)

Was that at the MS update site or did you go for the full download?

I simply downloaded the full 434mb service pack to backup as well as install. Generally a laptop comes with firewall and antivirus softwares already installed that might hamper things at times or you simply got hungup with the long lines now that people realize it came out with the MS servers bogged down. HP has a lot of proprietary items mixed in with their preinstalls. Now to see how a friend's Toshiba model does also running Vista HP on it.

Ah yeah, I forgot to mention it was the full 400MB download. I'm wondering if the firewall had something to do with the problems, but I don't understand why networking was even required seeing as it was the full download. I tried going with wifi disabled and it made no difference...

Something has active or simply installed that's preventing the installer from running correctly. The whole thing only took about 5 minutes here to unpack itself and see everything go on the longest time seen with the Net framework 3.0 and 3.5 releases. One was like 75mb in size.

One thought besides being a rare bad download would be disabling all non essentials in the startiup and services tabs in the msconfig utility. After checking off the hide all ms services box say foobar to essentially everything else to allow the installation to proceed.

If things go well it will be on fast. But if something is still causing issues you might see something in an error message or the event viewer you can remove long enough too see SP1 go on.

Review the list seen on the link posted earlier on the programs that won't work with SP1 like Zone Alarm if you have one of those on. It looks like a long shot but it could be the work around needed.

I have installed SP1 with no issues. I have noticed some increased speed in file copying with no problems as far as drivers are concerned.

Probably not the firewall.. Although I suppose that's possible. More than likely the antivirus. You'd also want to make sure the essential services are running. If you were previously doing updates with success, however, they more than likely were.

I really like HP laptops. I'm really big on the 6000 and 9000 series. I have a 9700 series at home that I happen to think is the mutt's nuts. :)

For two days after I installed vista SP1 there were a few websites including eBay that just refused to work regardless of what browser I used but when I used ubuntu or xp it worked fine. I was pissed and ready to revert but after those two days it started working again. Still a mystery to me but I changed nothing else during this time.
