Windows & Windows Explorer problems

My Toshiba L505 laptop with Vista SP2 has started experiencing problems: the Windows Update won't download updates (sometimes states an error code, sometimes not), and often tells me that windows has to be restarted (and then restarts it). Tells me "the host process for Windows Services stopped working and was closed - a problem caused the application to stop working" can't be found. Spybot finds nothing, Superantispyware finds the assorted adware issues, Malwarebytes doesn't find anything, but there is a definate issue. Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

We need to know what the error code was as it doesn't seem to be malware related.

Just like taking a car to a mechanic - I can't seem to replicate the code. It still won't let me commit to Windows Update: when I attempt it from the Start Menu, I get (after a couple of minutes) a screen that says I need to update windows. When I try, it tells me that there is an error with windows, and it has to be restarted. Then it restarts, but everything is very slow, or doesn't respond at all (like PrintKey or Snipittool, which is why I'm typing this all out). When I try to access windows update on the web, I get a screen that states "IE cannot display the webpage". The option to diagnose connections problems returns the result that no problems were found with the connection. Do you think Windows is corrupted? Any ideas? Thanks John.

Hey, John: I was able to replicate the error message when I attempted to connect for Windows Updates. "Windows could not search for new updates. An error occurred while checking for new updates for your computer. Error found: 80072EFE". That's about it. Thanks for your help - saving me again!

Hey, John - I tried everything in the MS knowledge base without success. Then I realized that the only major changes recently made were an update to Vista SP2, and an update to IE8. I tried to uninstall the IE8 by first trying to install IE7, but MS wouldn't let me, saying that my system won't support IE7 - I guess I'm stuck with IE8. Then I uninstalled Vista SP2 and, lo and behold, the problem with Windows Update corrected itself.

Now the only periodic issue is a redirect that takes you away from the page you're on and sends you to some ad page or different search page. In fact, it pulled me from this message as I was typing. I've updated my scan tools and will be running all the assorted scans. Any ideas on the redirect? Thanks for your help, John.

Just run malwarebytes and post a hijackthis log along with the malwarebytes log.

Hey, John - I've run a updated Malwarebytes and a Hijackthis. I ran an AVG scan earlier in safe mode, but a ton of files came up as "Locked file. Not tested." And don't you know it, I was just hijacked and redirected while typing this by: http://wamad-its.com/result.php?Key...cc5e8caa10c76efbd45c9d2b6ead40375be&Submit=Go. Took me to "Mega Search".

Here are the logs. Something missing from the Hijackthis "running processes" are two instances of "csrss.exe", which I was led to believe was a virus/malware thing. To try and stop this process in Task Manager leads to serious computer WHY DID YOU DO THAT?! type issues (auto shutdown, reboots, dos screens, etc.). Also, I keep getting a Windows popup stating that "Host process for windows services stopped working and was closed. A problem caused the application to stop working correctly." Sorry to be such a pain - Thanks again for your help:

Ok then, lets do this.

Download and Run ComboFix
If you already have Combofix, please delete this copy and download it again as it's being updated regularly.
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.

In your next reply please post:
  • The ComboFix log
  • A fresh HiJackThis log
  • An update on how your computer is running

Hey, John - Here are the results of the combofix & hijackthis. Combofix stated right away that it had found a rootkit, and had to reboot before the scan. Computer still wants to redirect a bit, and sends up the windows error messages. (Nothing though since the combofix of a few minutes ago).
Here you go:

So your saying everything is working fine now? If you don't use all those Toshiba utilities then use the msconfig utility to stop them from running at bootup. Keep me posted.

Hey, John - So far it seems OK. I dumped some of the Toshiba utilities. My initial problem with the Windows Update was resolved with the uninstall of Vista SP2. Have you heard anything about that, and do you think it would be OK to just blow that off? (I've not yet installed XP SP3 on my desktop because of the supposed issues it has). Also, Task Manager still shows two entries of csrss.exe - so can I assume there is nothing evil about these? Thanks again for all your help!

Are both instances listed as system as a user name? Do a file search on csrss.exe and tell me if more than one was found and what file sizes they are.

Hey, John - The two entries of csrss.exe are listed in Task Manager as SYSTEM. One is 1132 KB and the other 1252 KB, and both ID as Client Server Runtime Process. A search of Files/Folders does not return any results.

Other than that, the computer seems to working fine. Let me know what you think. Thanks again.

Not sure why you would have 2 instances of it but as long as everything is working ok then I wouldn't worry about it.
