Hi all,
I have problems connecting to internet on XP. it detects the modem but cant acces web pages. On 7 an Ubuntu it works well but i have some games for XP only and i cannot play them online. Help?
(I use router)

Go into your computer properties and then device manager. Go under network adapters and find your network adapter. Now, go on a different computer and download the driver for your adapter*. Use a flash drive or something of the sort to put it on your computer.

*Make sure the driver you download is compatible with XP

What Service Pack does your copy of XP have installed ? These days you have to have Service Pack 3 for XP to be able to access the internet. I had that same problem setting up a computer recently. What you have to do is download the installation package for Service Pack 3, onto another computer, then copy it onto a flash stick, then install it on your computer, WITH THE INTERNET CABLE DISCONNECTED. Once it is installed, then reboot, shutdown, and reconnect the cable.

Not sure why you are saying that. XP SP1 and 2 can access the internet just fine. I was on a old dell that only had SP1 installed the other day and it was online.

Most likely its drivers as XP doesn't have a lot of native ethernet drivers.

Doesn't matter what service pack you have, that's a stupid thing to say really.
And install it with the LAN cable disconnected? LOL!

John, that may well be true in some cases, but with XP Home you have to have Service Pack 3. I found that out from an expert online. Further it must be installed with the internet disconnected.

Not sure what EXPERT you talked to, but its a total lie.

JHM, you are incorrect. Yes, you may have issues running Windows Updates without SP3 installed, but you don't need SP3 in order to get online, and you don't need to be disconnected from the internet to install SP3.

It sounds to me like no driver is installed on XP if 7 and Ubuntu aren't having this issue.

Id reset the router, I am thinking this is an IP conflict issue. If it can see the modem then the ethernet adaptor should have the drivers.

You won't find your router in Device Manager, you'll find the ehternet/internet driver though.

Reset the router.
