Windows XP Constantly Updating???

Hi

I have done a complete reformat & reinstall of OS in the last four days of my C: drive and after accepting all the updates so far, it seems every time I go to shut down, Windows XP says it has yet another bunch of updates for me...

Now, I seem to remember having this issue once before. I asked someone about it and I remember there being some error, which was fixed somehow but I don't remember the details, it was so long ago.

Do I really need that many updates or is there something wrong here? If so, any advice to offer?

Many thanks

Because you are reloading windows from scratch it has to reupdate all over again, don't worry it will be all updated after a couple of days.
You can also go online to microsoft and update all at once instead.

What service pack did you install? SP1, SP2, or SP3 or the original version of XP with no service pack applied? If you didn't install SP3 then it may take a few days to get fully updated.

I doubt you will need every one. You can also click on the details and find out what the update is and read about it then uncheck it. You can or i do have auto update turned off, BUT do check manually maybe once a month and pick and choose. Lot times it would reboot and keep going back and do it again. Maybe several times and check for updates. Many times the updates have to be applied before taking the next.

You do not need so many updates.Just turn the automatic updates off.Trust me...you do NOT need all those updates. The clean Windows XP SP3 install together with your drivers for the hardware is ALL you need trust me...
Unless if some of your games or programs NEED SOME of the update or updates in order to work then yes install ONLY those update or updates you NEED in order to make THOSE programs or games to work otherwise DONT lol.It can screw up your entire system and it eats a LOT of space on the HDD.

Okay... Thanks!

I've just found out how to turn them off. Seems I had the system set to install them every day!
Now turned off. I might go back and set it to once a month or something managable.

Many thanks for your help, guys. I thought something was wrong with my computer!

I disagree, this is poor advice. Update you machine, theres a reason for updates.

If there's an error preventing some updates being installed, get the latest Windows installer, version 4.5 If I remember rightly. Though it's unlikely that that is the problem if a clean install of Windows was done just days ago.

If you are using a 56 kb modem it will take a long time to download all the updates; if using broadband, they should be downloaded quickly.

Go to the download site via Help and Support, and see if any errors are shown after it has scanned your computer.

Imo accepting all updates is a recipe for disaster. Every major problem on my PCs has been due to the optional updates sticking their noses where they are not needed. MS thinking they know better than the software and hardware houses.

I totally disagree with Bigfella; those optional updates are an accident waiting to happen. Download if you have an issue that is addressed by one of them. I have not downloaded a single optional update for 6 years.

You should definitely catch up on SP3 and all the essential security updates since then.

I believe I have SP3 installed.

If the machine is constantly updating, then that is in itself an annoyance and therefore a problem. I'm sure I will get along just fine by updating periodically, rather than every single time I switch it on or off.
