Windows XP Formatting Hard Drive Issue/Question

Hello Group,

I am having issues with Windows XP trying to do a format on my hard drive and I cannot figure out what is causing this.

What is happening is when I go to do a full format on the drive, both the CD Rom drive and the hard drive will both start spinning really fast as they always have in the past, and then the progress indicator showing the format progress will appear, but what happens next is the issue im having. After about 15 to 30 seconds, the CD Rom drive and the hard drive will both slow down to practically nothing almost unresponsive and the hard drive led on the front will be lit continuously orange, and there wont be any progress of formatting. Now after numerous times of starting over and trying again, if i do get it to start formatting it will take over an hour just to get to 24%. I tried doing a quick format and it told me that the drive might be damaged but I had this drive in my Linksys EFG120 storage box and it worked fine and i used this drive earlier with DOS 6.22 and Windows XP in it and didnt have any issues, but all of a sudden now i do.

Does anyone know what might be wrong here to cause this, or any suggestions on what to check or look for? Maybe I have something not setup correctly?

Thank you for your time reading this,

Doug

Sounds like you're doing it right.

Can you put the drive in another computer and format it?

Then when you install, don't format, just install.

Sounds like your drive is going out. I had the same thing happen to me while trying to re-install XP on my current rig. The HDD was working fine in my old system but I had been noticing a decrease in seek time. I think once I added the extra stress of re-installing Windows my drive finally crapped out on me. Reformat the drive again but this time do a full format as it erases the drive like a quick format but also runs check disk and will let you know if the drive is done.

Did you read his post?

He can't format while installing. It locks up...

My bad, must have read over it or, well I don't know what happened, I still think he's got a crapped out HDD. So in that case, I would do as Bodaggit suggested and try getting the drive up on another system and try running check disk and formatting from there.
