Windows XP Issues

I have a pc I'm trying to fix. Its a Pentium 4 3.0 ghz, 2gb corsair memory, 7600gt, windows xp. Its saying disk read error at boot sometimes and sometimes it boots normally. When it does get in sometimes it freezes up while running programs in windows and i have to manually restart, its had to recover from a serious error once. It seems to work better at my house than at my clients for some reason. I have had the same errors here but it runs more smoothly and longer here. Ive reinstalled windows xp pro sp3 twice, replaced the cmos battery, ran western digital hard drive diagnostics quick and extendended tests, both passed. I also ran memtest and passed. Thank you.:)

Just because the HDD passed diags doesn't mean there isn't an issue with it. I'd say replace the drive.

I fix computers through an internet ad but most of what I do is OS or software related. When I run into a hardware problem I don't know how to pin point it. I ran a hard drive diognostics test for the first time a few days ago and memtest just yeasterday, so I'm glad I found Hiren's Boot CD for future use. I will replace the drive depending on the cost. Thank you.:)

I had a unknown device in device manager that was found by installing Asus CoolnQuiet. I searched the hardware id: ATK0110 (which is now ATK0110 ACPI Utility in my device manager) and people said they were having freezing issues when the device was unknown and said it was solved after finding the device.
The Asus website doesnt have sata driver for xp for this borad. I have the chipset and raid drivers installed. My device manager shows no unknown devices.
At my clients house, the computer freezes and shows signs of issues within 10 minutes, but here at my house it runs fairly well, but still with some more minor problems.

I replaced the drive. I tried to install windows 7 on the drive and when the installation was expanding the file it would stay at 0% then say windows could not find or use the intstallation files they may be missing or corrupt. Then I tried to install windows 8 and windows xp and the both hung while trying to load the setup interface. Windows xp made it passed to the setup once, but i was hesitant to install so I returned the drive and got a new one. (samsung 750gb instead of 250gb) Windows 8 wont load on this one and windows 7 just gave me the same message..cant find the required installation files they may be missing or corrupt.
When I first booted up with this 750gb drive i got a message at the bios screen saying something like overclocking profile could not be loaded or is not valid- press f1 to enter setup or f2 to boot with default settings

Thank you for the replies. I'm going to put any version of windows i can onto usb and attempt installation. Would bad memory be causing the errors i was experiencing when i had xp installed like, the disk read errors, the freezing in the os or the one i just got about the overclocking from the bios. I haven't changed any of the overclocking settings in the bios. Thank you.

couple things...the dvd drive is locking up on me and ive had to manually eject it. windows 8 setup loaded with the hard drive unplugged. it an asus p5b board and i think it has ide and sata. theres a setting in the bios about sata mode. i have i set to compatible and there also enhanced and disabled i think to choose from

Did you previously test your ram with Memtest? If not, download it and burn it to a CD, boot to it, and test your RAM.

Changing the interface mode won't make any difference - you only change it if you can't get the Windows install to detect the hard drive.

I'd try the USB method for installing Windows. If that also fails, then you either have a defective hard drive or a bad motherboard. Keep in mind that just because the RAM passed Memtest doesn't mean it can't be bad.

i changer the sata mode to enhanced configured as ide and im in windows 8 setup. Thank you for the help. Ill post again if i have any further issues.:)

Windows installed fine. I was switching out the memory modules (2 corsair xms 1gb) and I noticed with one of the modules the pc was freezing at the windows 8 loading screen and not loading windows, so i only have one chip in right now and it seems to be running fine. My question is about the hard drive, would it be worth it to install windows on it again and see the result? I'm hesitant to charge my client for the new drive. Thank you.:)
