hi, my class mate has this problem on his computer, it has windows XP Home Edition on it and everytime he wants to log off from either 1 of the 3 accounts he has it says this:

Code:
The instruction at "0x017868a5" referenced memory at "0x017868a5".
The memory could not be "read".

Click on OK to terminate the program.
Click on CANCEL to debug the program.
so if he clicks on OK or CANCEL the computer restarts

i went to his place and ran a couple of Registry scans (RegCleaner, CCleaner, Registry Mechanic), after i fixed the registry it happens again, its not a virus or spyware etc. cuz he doesnt have internet connection oh that computer, i didnt try the Windows XP repair yet, maybe an important file is deleted?

so what do you think the problem is?

P.S. he is kinda n00b in computers and has 3 sisters that are on the same computer

there is a strong possibility that it is not software reltaed at all..... that error is quoting memory addresses, direct from the RAM. Basically that message is windows telling you that it cant find something that it has stored in the RAM. Im sure youve already gathered what im going to tell you to do now, run MemTest86 and post back with the results....
