Windows XP Price? And Help.

I currently have Windows XP installed on my current system, I am going to build a new system, but I heard for a new copy of Windows it is $300!!
Is there a way to take the Windows on my current system, and install it on to my new computer.

I won't be using any parts from my old computer except my CD/DVD drive and possibly my hard drive.


Is that the correct price, I thought it was only $100, and is there another way (not piracy) that Ican get Windows without paying premium for it. Like getting it from my old system?

The first thing to do there is run a search for XP prices amongst the Canadien vendors to see which ones offer the lowest prices. If you don't have a current copy of a Windows full installation disk that would be the thing to go after. On a new build you will want XP to be able to have a fresh detection of the new hardware environment as well as using the installation features and ability to repair if needed. Often you need the installation disk when prompted by an installer for a new software or hardware.

I don't know about taking windows off your old computer, if it was a pre-built system(like dell, hp, etc...)then the os is tied to the motherboard so it won't be possible but if you built the system and have the windows cd then yes you can install it on your new system

educational discount, I work for a school district so I get it. its going to be the best price you can probably get. Ever school system is assigned a microsoft sales rep. Talk to your teachers and stuff and get in contact with your rep, then see about buying a copy.
 
Thanks guys, I don't know what the sales clerk was talking about.
I told him I wanted to build my own system and he advised me not to saying it would be more expensive and that a fresh copy of Windows cost $299.99
