Windows XP Pro freezes a lot

Hi,

I've just installed XP Pro onto my pc through a new MOBO and on a newly reformatted HDD. All seems good, except that the screen frequently seems to freeze. Sometimes when it's been left for a while, other times whilst it's being used. Whatever is on the screen just seems to lock-up and you I cannot do anything other than switch off the PC and then switch it back on again, when everything seems good agaim for a while (until the next time it freezes).

Any thoughts or advice appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Hi,
Yes, I've now updated all the drivers I can think of/find. Damn thing still freezes quite frequently. The whole system just locks up, including what is on the screen. I can only solve it by switching off and then starting again. The problem seems to get worse, the longer the system is active. I wonder if it's because it is getting hotter? Also, thinking about getting an AGP video card, just in case it is a problem withthe on-board video. Any more advice will be appreciated......
Thanks

This could be as simple as the most common problem i see when working on computers built by people. There is one pin on one of the power supplies that is not fully connected. On the hdd's or fans that share it will tend to stop the hdd for only a few seconds but its enough to freeze the computer check all power connections on all hdd's and things that possible share with them which is bad but still check and make sure all of them are plugged in and working correctly.

Hi,
Thanks for that guys. I guess I'll try the simplest thing first and recheck all the power connectors etc. If that works then that's great. If not I'll come back with some more info on hardware etc. I didn't say that it IS getting hot, it was more of a question that I was wondering about, because it seems to be worse when the PC has been on for a while. I'm not sure how I would Over Clock it, perhaps someone could tell me simply what this is and why it would happen (please forgive the ignorance of someone still learning as I go along).

Hi again,
I have double checked all the power connectors and they all appear to fit snugly. If there is a problem in this regard I can't see it. Sadly the system still freezes up. GRRRRRRR!
The hardware is a Celeron 2.5 Gig CPU, Maxtor 40 Gig HDD, a combi cd-rw & dvd-rom. The MOBO is an Asrock M266A rev 3.0. Any further ideas gratefully received.

that should work... i ran xp pro on a AMD K6@450Mhz, 256MB RAM, 20GB HDD...

i'd suggest trying to install it on a spare HDD (if you have one) and trying that... if you have the same problems, then it's a hardware problem... if not, it's a problem with either the 1st HDD or the install of xp itself...

A few things come to mind:
- Temperatures and voltages
- Memory :)

Hi,
I have tried the system with a different PSU (with correct voltages getting through-according to the MOBO BIOS), same problem, so I guess it's not that. I am currently awaiting a chassis fan and some new CPU grease, to see if that helps the problem. I shall also try to swap out the RAM for some RAM that I know is OK. If that fails, I'll come back to the forum.
Thanks.

Hey,
I tried everything and was getting desperate, but then tried swapping out the MOBO for a different one. Bingo....it works fine now. Can anyone suggest what might make a particular MOBO freeze intermittently and completely lock-up. The only remedy being to switch the PC off.
Thanks
