Windows XP Pro install

I'm trying to install windows xp pro on my laptop. After the install goes through formatting the disk, the next step it does is to "copy files".....now at this point it runs and copies 11% of the files and just stops. I then shutdown the laptop and re-start the install....on this try is gets to 65% of the files copied then stops.

What could be causing this to happen? Why would one run copy to11% and then another time it copies 65% of the files?

Any direction would be appreciated..
 
It could simply from finger marks if there are no hardware problems like a bad dimm or a failing head on the hard drive even the lazer on the optical drive being used. First look over the disk itself carefully and try again. Sometimes the optical drive simply needs to see a lens cleaner used due to dust/dirt there.
