Windows Xp Problem

Hi,

My computer recently ran into a a problem on startup flashing me the old Blue Screen with an error message. Anyway when it finally did load into Windows I was met with another error coming from my Norton Internet Security program about how it couldnt load auto protect. I went into Explorer and checked my files and went to the Windows Folder where now all that inhabits are Compressed Files with titles like $NTUNINSTALLKB80217$ and so on....

Can anyone clear up for me what the heck has happend? is this a virus? malfunction of the hard drive?? If anyone can shed some light on this that would be great

Well I looked again and my Windows Files are there but wayyyy down the list...So the quick thing would be to start fresh and format?
