Windows XP Professional re-installation

If i was to reinstall Windows XP Professional....would it delete all my files and such that i previously had on my computer?

All your programs and everything. It does a format before it installs, so you should back up your important stuff to a cd or DVD. Make sure you have the install files for all your programs and back those up
 
ah

im having problems starting my computer up. It says windows wasnt shut down properly and gives me five options like safe mode and last known good configuration. But whichever one i chose it makes my computer restart and it goes straight to the same option screen so im baffled as to what to do
 
if you do "upgrade" instead of a new installation, it wont delete your files, but it most likely wont solve your problem either. My suggestion is to take the hard drive out and put it in another computer, backup your documents, and then re-install windows. Or you can try using the Linux Live-CD (Knoppix), however i calt help you there.
