Windows XP question?

When I put in my Windows XP Professional CD that came with the computer, I get a message that my OS is newer than the one on the CD. I assume this is due to updates. (My computer is about 5 or 6 years old) . How do I tell which version of Windows XP is on my computer?
 
Go to "control panel" and double click "system". Or click windows button and press R at the same time which, brings up the run command. Then type "dxdiag" and press "enter". If a prompt comes up push "no". Click the "system" tab and that will tell you everything.
 
Go to run, type cmd [ENTER] then winver. It'll tell you everything there.

If you want to re-install windows, you need to boot from the CD and it'll allow you to install.
 
Thanks! Both methods told me I have Windows XP Professional version 5.1. My CD says version 2002. Are these different, and if so, how do I get a version 5.1 CD, and will my key still work? If anyone knows the answer, I'd really appreciate it, I do want to reinstall.
 
I don't get this, 5.1 is Service Pack 1 but Windows version 2002 is Sp2... I think you should definetely install that Windows from your CD; it should also have a new key.
 
Version 2002 of windows still version 5.1 of windows. The difference is Service Pack. If you install the cd from windows, it only install latest updates and service pack.

Isn't that what I said :D? And yeah, well then install the XP from your CD.
