Hey, I'm trying to fix someones computer. At the minute it goes on the loading windows screen the freezes so we're trying to do a windows repair with the cd. We've got onto the blue screen in which u press r to repair then the black screen appears tht says type 'exit' to restart and usually lists your hard drives to select to repair xp. There are no hard drives listed and it doesn't recognise any commands except 'exit'.
Now I'm guessing the hard drive has messed up Any ideas?

Thanks for any help you can give!

If you hit the initial R at the set up screen that boots you to the recover console. This is somewhat similar to a run level 3 or single user mode in Linux/Unix if you are familiar with that.

Hit enter at the first screen when booting off the CD (the blue screen that says hit enter to continue) and then when you get into the installation options, choose repair install.

Or from the recovery console you can run this:

Code:
chkdsk /r /f
that will try to repair your installation as well

We are trying a reinstall and has repartitioned drive. I am in the process of reformatting the drive bt it hs taken 1.5 hours and is still on just 38%!
Does this sound like a faulty hard drive?

did you chose quick format? You may need to do a complete wipe and reload if there was a lot of corruption.

See if you can get some HD diagnostic tools, usually the vendor of the HD will have some available to download. You may have hardware failure. You tried swapping out the easy stuff real quick like cables and such?
