Windows XP Services Stop/ Start as they please.

I have here a Toshiba Satellite laptop computer. It is a few years old. The OS is Windows XP Home Edition Version 2002 with Service Pack 3.

The issue is when the computer is started cold, or rebooted, some of the Services (local) turn off or on as they please. The main services doing so are "Themes" and "Wireless Zero Configuration".

After every reboot or cold start the "Luna" or blue them for Windows XP disappears from the options menu, and the computer starts with the "Classic" style interface. After researching a bit, I found that the "Themes" option in "Services" wasn't started. So I started it and it shows the correct blue interface every time.

However, even though I have to start the service myself after every boot, the "Themes" service is set to "Automatic". Path to Executable is set to: C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs. If that matters. The "Themes" service has no dependencies, and is not dependent on any other services, it states.

The "Wireless Zero Configuration" is an odder one. It has since disappeared from "Services", however, the wireless connection is working correctly. I used to have to enable that service as well to use the internal wireless card.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. It appears to me that maybe a few services are out of wack, and are causing some issues with other services.

Do you do any type of general maintenance on your machine like malware scans using malwarebytes as having just an antivirus program won't cut it, running Ccleaner on a regular basis to clean out all your temporary files.

Windows also corrupts real easy over time and the only way to fix this is to reinstall it fresh. How long as it been since a fresh install was done?

Yeah general maintenance is done. Nothing out of the ordinary on the virus part.

The OS has not had a fresh install. I suppose I will try a fresh install.

Is there no other advice? Something to do with the registry maybe?

How do you know there is nothing out of the ordinary as far as viruses go? What do you use to scan your machine with? Do you remember a day when everything was working correctly? If so, you can do a system restore back to that day or a couple days before that and see what happens. If a fresh install has never been done, then its basically time for one anyway.

I used AVG to scan for viruses. Nothing such as viruses. I have never used Malwarebytes, however.

I would do a system restore, except it was never turned on.

Reinstalling the OS is long overdo, as you said, and this time I will turn on system restore.

As I said before, running just an antivirus program won't keep you safe anymore. You need to run malwarebytes every few days. Yes, I would suggest a fresh install at this point anyway with one never been done before.

That makes sense. I will do as you suggested; fresh install, and download the suggested program. Thanks for the assistance.

as far as I know, you should never ever touch a folder in C that reads as SYSTEM. They are generally the files and drivers that run the system.
