ok i was wondering if this was possible. so i copied all the files from the windows xp setup cd to a 2nd partition on my comp. since i have windows on my first partition i wanted to boot the setup off my 2nd partition to reinstall the windows on my first partition. is there any thing i could do like in the boot.ini file or something to boot the setup off from my 2nd partition to reinstall windows on my first partition?

Sorry that won't work! That method was typically seen years back where companies would see their systems setup with a folder containing all files in order to save time carrying the installation disk around. That's a tech's old trick there for 3.1, 95, 98 but will not work for XP and Vista at this time.
The installation disks are designed to be booted from in order to start the installer while there is a 6 floppy method when you can't boot from the optical drive used like an external type. You can't boot from a partition with no OS on it. Booting from the cd is far more easier to see Windows go on anyways.

well the setup does run from the harddrive off a different partition. i was just wondering if the other way was possible.
The Windows installer has to detect the drives installed on the system while being loaded from a separate drive in order to create the primary if needed or replace the existing Windows found. You're dealing with an NT cored OS not an old Fat based one that uses a dos environment. Unlike previous versions of Windows you now have the hardware profiling process and product activation.
