Windows XP Strange Problem

hey there,

i have a problem with my Windows XP Pro SP2 installation on my pc. Most of the time it is fine, but sometimes it acts strange.

i usually have programs such as MSN, Xfire, Teamspeak, iTunes running. i like to use Safari / Firefox 2 / Firefox 3 beta browsers.

sometimes when i run these (inc only 1 browser), my pc will start freezing for about 1 or 2 seconds every now and again, as if it is being overloaded, i run the task manager and the CPU usage is fine, i have 2gb of ram, which according to my G15 is running normal, so i am unable to locate the problem here. has anyone got any ideas?

thanks

Dave.

Usually this problem occurs because of virus.. You better scan your computer with antivirus like kaspersky..

Absolutely. Besides, using Safari will only get you a virus! :D

If you're willing to, we can check for viruses.

  • Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
  • Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
  • Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Additional Tasks dialogue.
  • Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
  • Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
  • At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
  • Click Save to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.
  • Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
  • Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
  • DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

this is weird lol... i did do a scan with AVG Free 8.0 but it came up with nothing.

Hmm the logs is mostly clean, no traces of a spyware that would be your problem.
Let's fix these two items and then continue with your main problem.

Before the fixing, please disable Spybot's Tea timer. It stops the entries being fixed.
Don't forget to re-enable it after this!
When you disabled it, reboot your computer and continue:
Open your HijackThis again and choose Do a system scan only.
Check these entries:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Alcmtr] ALCMTR.EXE

Now click Fix checked. Reboot your PC and re-enable your Tea timer protection.

Check for the voltages through a software like SiSoft Sandra... Also open your cabinet and clean the RAM chips. If nothing helps format and reinstall the operating system.
PS - Stop using Safari. Mozilla Firefox 3 which will be with us in a month is the best browser around.

im only using Safari because im trying it out, and i like the look of it lol....

i usually use Firefox, like i said in my post

i currently have Firefox 2, 3 beta and safari installed, that i use.

thing is, this only happens sometimes, and it can be fixed by a restart or by logging out then back in....

Since it happens randomly, virus may not be the cause. Is it a fresh (newly installed OS) system or has it been a long time since you installed both the OS? It can happen overtime as well due to incorrect uninstallation and infrequent defragmentation.

If you say about 1-2 seconds freeze time it can be that your virus protection doing a scan? Or a application maybe need 1-2 seconds with full CPU power and that will "pause" it. I got a G15 and the monitors working BUT not to 100%.

no scan is running when it happens. i isntalled the OS maybe 4 - 6 weeks ago, i have defragged several times (including 3 days ago) and it still happens every now and again, not all the time though...

argh, i dont just use the Beta Firefox 3, i use Safari (which is no longer Beta) and firefox 2 and it happens with all of them.

though it hasnt happened for a few days now :D
