Windows xp vs Windows 7 (Business World)

Hi Everyone,

My small company wants me to try out windows 7 on a few a few computers and then give my thoughts comparing the pros and cons of windows 7. So far I have many more pros

Pros Win 7

User friendly
supports more devices
device manager can download and install drivers via internet(xp sucked at that)
Faster bootups
More robust
64 bit software (Matlab other programs we use)

Cons

older programs might now run (pre xp)
Will need a higher end machine to run 64 bit or even 32
7 is still a new OS so it would not be as stable as XP

Im sure i am missing a ton of different things here... Anything I am missing?

I actually feel windows 7 is more stable than xp if anything. The main key to stability is turning off auto update from windows update.

XP is cheaper to buy though (i assume). At any rate I don't think a small company would benefit from upgrading to win7, unless it's a software company or something similar. It would be better to save the money for eventually upgrading the computers and getting win7 then.

Well, I guess one downfall might be that there's no upgrade option from XP to Windows 7 so if you have many computers, you'd have to reformat them all and potentially lose data if not properly backed up. Furthermore, the time it would take if you cannot install multiple systems at once could be daunting for a large corporation with multiple computers.

I would have to agree though, there aren't many drawbacks to this option but you should definitely use a third-party software for updates. I don't really see any huge performance difference in terms of business but being prepared for the future is definitely helpful. However, I believe XP will be used in the business world for quite some time until Windows 7 has been around awhile longer. Trends also show that IE6 is also the browser of choice for business and Windows 7 comes installed with IE8 I believe so having to remove and replace it with IE6 would take an additional amount of time.

Hope this helps.

Mtb211,

Prior to migrating to Windows 7 it would be best to download and run the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor.

The Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor will determine if your current computer configuration will be compatible with Windows 7, for further information as well as a link for download please go here: http://tinyurl.com/no4xb7

Another resource to verify compatibility is available at the Microsoft Windows 7 Compatibility Center located at the following link: http://bit.ly/1gW6Ns

Also, please note that when migrating from Windows XP to Windows 7 you will not have an "in place upgrade" option. You will however have the option to select "custom" install when prompted. The Windows 7 install process will then copy all of your data in "My Documents" over to a Windows.old folder within Windows 7 itself. All applications and documents stored in other locations will have to be reinstalled / transferred manually.

Well if you think a little bit better, you dont have to lose your data. You can upgrade XP to Vista and then upgrade Vista to Windows 7.:D
But that sucks since then you need Vista OS as well xD,but it works like charm:D

+1 for Jessica.

Also you should be able to run older programs on win7 with their compatibility mode.
