hey its me again and i have another problem. I installed Realplayer, Audacity, and Windowsblinds. I restarted my comp, and i got past post, but my computer was stuck on the bootup screen. I can get into safe mode, i uninstalled all those programs...still can't load onto my OS. anyhelp would be appreciated...plz help.:(:(:(

OOPS! Something saw a bad install there alright! Try disabling any of the items if remaining the msconfig utility's startup group while in safe mode. Those custom Windows Blinds are nothing but a headache to start with however. I ended performing a repair install of XP to clean up one mess!

thnx for the reply pc eye, so uninstalled those programs, but still no go :(. I scanned and everything still no go :(. Then i tried thinking back of what could've caused this...then i rememebered this morning befor ei left for school, i pulled out the plug to my external drive. My dad turned on the comp while i was at school, to use the networked printer, and my external was not plugged in. i restarted the comp when i came home, while i plugged in my external again, and it would'nt load. So after all this i decided to pull out the external plug...and it BOOTED! :). but it still brings more questions...how come it didnt boot w/ the external plugged in. ill restart comp again and let your guys know if it worked.

update:
no it won't work, i had to boot w/ out the external drive plugged n..makes no sense...i alwasy used to before today boot w/ it plugged in...any ideas guys??

Remove the item listing for it in the device manager by right clicking on the drive item there under storage and choosing the uninstall option. Shutdown and plug the drive back in and then power everything back up.

The idea there is to see if removing the drive item and seeing a fresh detection will get you back again. It's done often with internal drives and could work there as well.

Bootup screen meaning the XP screen, or stuck on the post screen?

If it's stuck on the post screen, that's because the BIOS is trying to initialize the USB device and can't. Don't listen to him, his real nick should be "I talk smack".

If you turn off legacy USB support (ie disable it) it will boot up first time, every time whether the drive is plugged in or not. It's actually quite common (I see it a lot with cable modems plugged in by USB). It can work fine for ages, then one day it fails to initialize them repeatedly. Sometimes if you wait a long time (I've seen 15-30 minutes) it will eventually boot. Easier just to disable legacy USB support in the BIOS.

hey buddy

first turn off ur dt from the main buttom (the one on the case)

after few mins turn it on then press Delete repeatedly ...

if u didn;t succeed you may have another problem bro

Goodluck

i just uninstalled the disk drive in the device manager and it booted perfectly, thanx guys...all of u responded quickly...thnx once again.

A Windows glitch is the common cause where it simply forgets that the drive or device is there when loading up. You see this problem more often with internal drives where suddenly you can't open up a second drive through MyComputer or Windows Explorer. Once uninstalled in the DM the new hardware found meesage may appear where you let Windows reinstall it's own drivers.

Disk drive?. Btw what happen with the real problem? Software or ?.

it wasnt a software issue...i think, it was because i booted up w/o my external plugged. I had to uninstall the drivers, and reinstall it to get it to boot up.

Yeah, that is all controlable from the Bios. Just something you can tweak. It will do the same if you have a CD or another disk in the CD/DVD drive. Depending in which order the device's are listed in the Bios will just mean that it may load faster or slower. If you are not planning on doing much booting then i suggestion that you rearrange the boot order in the Bios so that the HDD is where the POST looks first. This will help speed things up and should prevent futher problems.

Generally with 3 HDs and 2 optical drives here I simply set hard drive as the only boot device and use the F8 boot device right at post to choose from a list when wanting to boot from the XP drive(Vista default presently) or from one of the optical drives(Linux live or GParted or...).

You can also speed up the boot time a little by reducing the "timeout=30" seconds down as low as "timeout=2" seconds in the boot.ini file in XP like seen in capture here. That will reduce the amount of time the boot options are displayed if you are not dual booting with another version of Windows.

hey pc eye, its off topic, but don't you think you should be a Mod??? because i think your were the first one to ever reply to my first thread ever :p

Sometimes not being a mod is better in some ways. That is due a lot to having other obligations and not always being logged on or being called away at any time on a 24/7 basis.

Life is a learning process in it's own self all too often! There's always a new twist or turn in just about anything. :P

Anyways I'm glad to see that method worked well for the external drive there. I was considering going for a 500gb or 750gb external drive here rather then adding in one of the new 1tb sata models now seen.

That would free up one of the two 500gb model(one for storage) and see Vista moved from the ide drive onto the then second 500gb then. But the case has the right air flow setup for adding in even another pair of 500s since the board has 6 sata ports onhand.

An external however would allow large transfers of files for different systems when downloading drivers for restoring old cases or now upgrading a friend's laptop. But it's usally takes a fresh redetion even with other usb type devices to see things going again.
