Windows XP won't install

:confused: I just built this computer of mostly new parts. The only exceptions was a hard drive, cd rom and the A drive. All theses parts were working fine in my old computer.

My problem is I reformatted the hard drive because it had windows 98 on it. It is a Maxtor hd. I call my self reformating it. Maybe I just don't know what I am doing. I went to maxtor and downloaded a floppy with tools to format with. When I start my new computer is says no operating system and ask me to install my cd to boot from it. However it does not respond to my disc. So I tried another XP disc and had the same results.

Does anyone know what I am doing wrong besides using, used parts? I have another hd I think it is a western digital. The windows will start to install on it but hangs up. I think it is a bad hd. Got it on e-bay pretty cheap. I would prefer to use the maxtor. Could it be I did not format it right? The maxtor was working fine in my old computer.

Any solutions/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
 
Possibly that Maxtor drive wasn't reformatted right. Its best to just:
  • Turn on your computer
  • go to the bios
  • make sure that Maxtor hdd and the CD drive is being seen
  • go to boot options (might have to lookar ound a bit in the bios)
  • set the cd/dvd drive as the first boot device
  • put in the Operating system boot CD
  • go to exit and SAVE changes
  • and then 'press any key to boot from CD'
  • then reformatt the hdd and you should be good to go

Well I did all that with no luck. I went back to the western digital hd. here is what is happening. I put in my windows xp disc and it starts loading windows then it ask if I want to repair or replace. So I tell to replace. I want to start fresh. Besides it will not open windows at all. Then it gives the warning about ntsf for fat 32 ect. Well I tried to format for fat 32 and it won't let me. I am not sure what I am doing wrong. What ever it is I can not load windows on my hard drive.

I never could get the windows disc to format or install on the maxtor hard drive. I went to the maxtor site and downloaded a floppy to format with and set up parimaters but no luck getting the XP disc to work. The computer would boot up and say no operating system and then ask to install cd. When I did it would say boot failure and then go to another screen and say BOOT From CD: and then the curser would just blink and it would be totally unresponsive.

Does anyone have any ideas. Could bios be off some where? I do not know anything about bios other than setting date and time and boot sequence.
