Windows XP Won't Install!!!!

I currently have a PC with Windows Vista Ultimate installed and I wish to dual boot it with Windows XP although it is not allowing me to do this. I have dual booted several times before just this time problems have occured.

When I put the windows XP installation disk in the computer boots from it and goes through loading all the drivers etc etc until it gives the status at the bottom which says "Windows is starting" it gets stuck on this for about 30 seconds before showing a Blue Screen Of Death with error code: stop:0x0000007B and I have never managed to get past this. It goes on about new installed drivers and hardware of which there is non, as well as viruses and corrupt registry and I have checked them all and there is nothing of the sort.

I have changed over hard drives completely removing the one that has vista on and putting a brand new blank one in and still it does the same! It's driving me absolutely crazy and I have been stuck with this error for weeks and can't work it out.

Becuase I have removed the hard drive completely and tried a fresh one does that not mean there is something the matter with the BIOS on the system?

Any help or even a solution that works would be fabulous!!!!!!!!
Thanks TR

Hello and welcome to the forum!!!

If you think your BIOS might be the problem, can you go into the BIOS and reset it to the default factory settings?

Thanks for the reply, but I have just tried what you suggested and still no luck. I don't have the foggiest idea what to do next.

Have I put this in the correct forum catagory btw because I don't seem to have recieved many replies to my post??

Thanks.

Yes, this is the right section to post your question. Sometimes if people are busy you might not get as many responses, and other times you will get a lot of responses. But don't worry, we'll keep working on it and maybe others who join in can contribute with some of their knowledge.

Well, I looked a bit into it and I found different reasons why you could be getting that error. Like you mentioned, it can range from anything like a boot-virus to device driver or hardware errors, to registry conflicts etc... In your case, since you have tried it with a brand new blank hard drive, I don't know if it can be a boot-virus. Maybe someone here knows if a boot-virus can implant itself in the BIOS or if the fact that you have a new hard drive eliminates the boot-virus as a possible culprit.

I found this article on the Microsoft site:
Here is a quote from the "General Troubleshooting" section at the bottom of that page.
If you receive one of these error messages while you are installing Windows XP, update the computer BIOS or obtain Windows XP drivers for your hard disk controller (from the manufacturer of your computer, system board, or hard disk controller), or do both. For information about how to update your computer's BIOS or obtain Windows XP drivers, contact your computer manufacturer. For additional information about the availability of drivers, see the Device Driver Issues section in this article.
Then on this Experts-Exchange page, I found someone who seems to have the same problem as you do. However, I can't read the responses to that post because you have to sign-up for a free trial to read them. If you want to, you can sign up for the free trial and see what people responded there.

Then, on this other page, I found the some more links. But I would focus on the one I gave you before the quote above.
UPDATE:
Here is some general info I found about boot-viruses (although I don't believe that is your problem). Anyway, just as an FYI - you can read this: http://kb.iu.edu/data/ahll.html

Well, the more I read about it, the more I'm thinking it is a device driver issue (although I'm not excluding other things at this point). Could you give me some details about your computer? And in that microsoft link I gave you before the quote, make sure you go through the section "Device Driver Issues". I have a feeling you might find your solution there - and maybe you will have to install some third party drivers (via F6) during the early stages of the XP installation. Again, here is a quote from that section of the article.

To determine if your hard disk controller is compatible with Windows XP and to obtain information about drivers that are included on the Windows XP CD-ROM or that are available for download, see the latest Windows XP Hardware Compatibility List (HCL). For additional information about the latest Windows XP HCL, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base: 314062 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314062/) The latest Windows XP hardware compatibility list

Here is a post of someone with your exact problem (had Vista pre-installed on pc, then removed it to put XP and the XP disk was probably missing some drivers for devices on this newer Vista computer - for example the hard disk controller). In this case it was a Dell Dimension computer. You can read it here if you want. Unfortunately they never said if the suggested solution helped. Here is a link from that post that could come in handy later, so I'll post it too. We'll see if we need it. Intel chipset downloads

Hi, thanks for your replies really appreciate them.

Still no luck. As you said about it being a device driver issue I too aggree now after looking at places on the net. It is a Seagate 400GB SATA disk drive and the operating system I am trying to install is Windows XP Professional but Service Pack 2 isn't on the disk so it doesn't have SATA controllers. If I look in the Device manager for the computer and look at the Storage controllers the three items that are present are:
*Intel(R) 82801GR/GH SATA RAID Controller
*Microsoft iSCSI Initiator
*NDAS SCSI Controller
The NDAS one because I have Storage devices on my network.

By looking at this I believe the top Intel one is the one I should be concerned about, so I went to the intel site on http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&ProductID=2101&DwnldID=13808&strOSs=44&OSFullName=Windows*%20XP%20Professional&lang=eng this site. This is what I was linked to by another page on the intel website to download as it said it was appropriate to my computer. I downloaded it, put it on floppy disk, then booted the windows XP disk and pressed F6 to install a 3rd party driver, it got to the section where it said press "S" then insert disk into floppy drive and press enter when ready, it reads the disk for about 2 seconds and then gives thie error:

"File txtsetup.oem caused an unexpected arror (1024) at line 1742 in d:\xpclient\base\boot\setup\oemdisk.c."

What on earth that means I have no idea. Maybe I have downloaded the wrong file from Intel. The computer came with no manufacturers floppy disk it's all a recovery partition, and there is nothing on there website. It's a HP by the way lol.

You may know better now what the next step is and if im downloading the correct thing. the name of the hard drive in the device manager is:
"ST3400820AS" if that is any help and it is a 32 bit system with 2GB of RAM and Intel Dual core 2700 processor.

If you need any other information just ask. I pray to lord you know what to do next. thanks again.

Is what you downloaded a file called iata76_enu.exe? If so, that should be correct. If not, then here is a link to the file I think you need.
Go here and click on "restart" in middle of the paragraph to get the download going. (But keep reading this first because I've made it easier for you).

Now, I don't know if you just put the .exe file onto the floppy. If you did, then that's why you got an error message. The thing is that in order to get the files you actually need for the F6 installation method via a floppy, you have to extract them from that .exe file using the command prompt. The instructions on how to do that are in the readme.txt link found on the download page link I just gave you. The important sections of that text file for you are sections 5.3 and 7.2. If you don't feel comfortable extracting it, I already did it for you.

I zipped them up and the zip file can be downloaded here: http://www.mediafire.com/?7cfdzy3gy1w
After you unzip them, copy them onto a floppy. DO NOT put them inside of a folder in the floppy. They need to be directly in that floppy root directory - in other words in the A: drive.

Okay, now follow these directions for the installation: http://www.intel.com/support/chipsets/imsm/sb/CS-021736.htm

When you are asked to choose what adapter/controller you want, make sure you select:
Intel® 82801GR/GH SATA RAID Controller
and not the:
Intel® 82801GR/GH SATA AHCI Controller

The names are similar, but don't get them confused. You need the RAID one.

I hope that works!!! Let me know.

Also, after you get xp installed, I would just save time and download sp2 directly here (even though it says NO, don't do it unless you are a developer). Sure it's a much bigger file, but it will save you the time of going update by update with windows automatic update program until it finally gets to the sp2 update.

And for the future, you could also "slipstream" sp2 into your current cd if you wanted. That way, the next time you install xp, it will incorporate sp2 during the install. Here are instructions on how to do that - if you are interested.

I just re-read your post and it sounds like you had the right files on the floppy. If after trying what I did, you still get the same error, then try choosing SCSI after pressing "S" during the F6 installation. I have heard it working for people who actually didn't have a SCSI disk, but who couldn't seem to get it working with the other options. I have read that several times in other forums. So give that a try if you're still stuck.

I was just reading another post and was reminded to tell you to unplug any external drives you have while setting this up. It could avoid glitches and "oopses".

UPDATE: I also just read this: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/archive/index.php/t-181910.html
Same problem you are having (same exact error message). In his case, the problem was the floppy drive itself. Once he replaced it, it worked fine. So, I guess that's something to keep in mind too.

hey, sorry ive taken so long to reply, had issues at home.

But just to let you know your solution worked. it turned out i had downloaded the incorrect drivers. and now its all installed and i can dual boot both systems absolutely fabulous. I am eternally greatful for you getting me out of that mess! Just installing sound drivers and stuf now from realtek and then everything is done and dusted.

Thanks again! Your a GOD!

Tom

You're welcome. :)
Hey, I'm glad to hear it all worked. I do have one question: when you pressed F6 to install the third party drivers, did you have to choose SCSI (like I mentioned some people had to even though they didn't really have a SCSI disk) or were you able to do it normally with the RAID instructions I posted earlier.

Anyway, I'm glad to hear the installation worked and you are now dual-booting. It can be really frustrating to be stuck at point like that during an installation.
