I was wondering if this is worth it or is it more of a marketing trick by xp to jump on the 64 bit bandwagon?
 
Keep your current OS, and when you do upgrade, buy the 64-Bit version of Vista, not XP x64.
 
64 bit isn't worth the trouble right now. Programs have to written in 64bit rather than 32 and you need 64 bit drivers. There isn't a whole lot of support for it and a lot of games and programs run worse on 64bit xp than on the 32 bit.
 
sounds good, was just wondering.

I picked up a copy of xp pro sp2 at the university electronics store for like 20 bucks and it came with both 64 bit and 32 bit versions. I was just wondering if it was worth the install.
 
Im using x64 and apart from the struggle of finding 64bit drivers i think that it is an improvment in games and multitasking. Also, a lot of 32bit programs are not made in 64 bit, i still cannot find a decent 64bit firewall.

Except NVidia Firewall, and I cant find it now :(
 
are driver supports for 64 bit gonna be made more priority now that vista 64 bit is almost out or will companies still be focusing on 32 bit?

Making the jump from XP to Vista x64 is a great idea, but not to XP x64 since besides being 64-bit, there are no other improvements.

And that was the case with XP x64, since no one really had it. Vista however has just as many drivers for its 32 and 64-bit versions.
 
could I use drivers written for 32-bit windows or would I have to get 64-bit drivers. If I can at least get my drivers running I might try it out, if it fails or is too much of a pain, I can always revert to normal windows.

No you cant, they have to be for 64-Bit Vista. Check to see if you have drivers for all your parts before buying it.
