i have just installed windows xp when i change it back to boot from the hardrive with the windows xp disk out it says there is a missing file but it works fine if i keep the windows disk in the drive and starting it from the cd
 
I would try reinstalling it again. Are you using a genuine Windows XP install DVD or is it just a burnoff of the original? Not that I'm accusing you of piracy, but sometimes people don't realize what's real and what's not.
 
make sure Bootsector/Antivirus protection is off in the BIOS

Sme BIOSes stop things writing to the master boot record. This is normally handy for stopping viruses, but bad if you want to install an OS as the bootloader needs to go there

Turn it off, boot your xp cd, go into the recovery console and login to your install.
Type fixboot at the prompt (i think)
