OK I have windows XP pro. And my pc keep freezing. First it freezes at the loadscreen with the windows logo so then i reboot, then it freezes at the login screen so again i reboot then i logon and go online and eventually it will freeze. I thought the problem was XP so i wiped out the HD and reinstall windows but it still freezes. I think i might have a virus in my RAM or something or maybe my HD is broken like physically or something. I dunno what to do. And on top that I supposelly can't register windows anymore cuz i reached my limit. WTF? for the past like 3-4 years i reinstalled windows like a kazillion times and i thought i had no limit since it's an OEM version of XP that i got from school. So please help me!!!

Open up your case and see if it needs cleaned out. It sounds like your system could be overheating, and a lot of dust can be the culprit. Take some canned air and a vacuum (if needed) and get everything nice and dusted off. Make sure to concentrate on heavy dust areas, around your CPU (heatsink, fan), PSU, video card (if you have one). Basically anywhere where there's a fan, there's bound to be dust buildup.

nope. is there like some way to flash the ram or something. i think i heard about that a while back.
Well, I don't think there's actually anything called "flashing RAM". Since RAM is volatile, it loses all its contents when power is disconnected from it. This means there's no way it's a virus or something stored on your RAM that is causing your problem. As you said, it could be your hard drive. One thing you could do is boot into safe mode and run error-checking on your drive.

It freezes in Safemode with networking so i dunno if that's different from regular safe mode. Well yeah it's different cuz it has networking but yeah I'll try regular safemode.

It freezes in regular safe mode too. I just tried it with a new HD and still froze. I cleaned it with the canned air. So i probably just got bad ram. Would a bad mobo cause this?

A bad motherboard, a bad power supply, a bad video card. Take your pick. There is probably more I haven't listed that could cause this problem. I think you will find after tedious detective work that one or more of your hardware components will be the culprit. Download memtest86 and test your RAM. Test it for 24 hours and see if any problems show up. After that start isolating various components until you find the offending part. Good luck.

Wait, this OEM CD you got from school, had it come previously with another computer? If that is the case, there are specific driver issues where you may be locked out of using that copy of Windows.

There's still a very good chance this is hardware related. Try running on just one stick of ram, minimal CD and HDD configurations. Basically just go and test the bare minimum of everything you have and work your way up.

I can't even do any detective work because now it won't turn on. It says previous shutdown due to thermal event. what does that mean? could it be the cpu? I thought i put a little too much thermal compound when i put it in but that was a while ago. April to be exact the cpu is a Intel Pentium 4 2.8GHz / 1MB Cache / 533MHz FSB / Prescott / Socket 478 / Processor and i used some of Ultra Silver Thermal Compound (1.0g) . should i put some more thermal compound. Or is that even the problem?

Thermal problem means HEAT. Something is getting too hot. Obviously a hardware problem. First check and see if all of your fans are running. You can remove the CPU and check the thermal compound but I would doubt that is the problem. If it was the CPU getting too hot you may have fries it. What kind of beeps do you get out of the system when you turn it in?
