Any easy ways to make Win XP boot faster?

Fresh install of windows and very few programs running.. the bit which takes the longest is the bit where the whole screen is black, and the windows XP logo is up, with the little bar down the bottom scrolling sideways .. Is taking about 2.5 minutes to boot fully atm

PC:

4870 grfx
6000+ am2 cpu
M2ne-sli mobo
4 gb DDR2 ram
Windows XP pro SP 3

PC has no spyware etc, very few programs booting.. was hoping there was something u could change to make it boot faster?

cheers

We are two identical items here namely the cpu and board being the AMD 6000+ X2 cpu and Asus M2N-E for the board. If you have an old 5,400rpm hard drive in then moving upto a 7,200rpm model would be a start since a clean install of Windows should never be taking that long even for Vista to reach the desktop.

The few options seen with a fresh copy of Windows is using the installation cleanup utility and looking over the few items to be seen in the startup tab found in the msconfig utility for something unnecessary to see loading up along with Windows. Some services can be set to manual rather then automatic as another means as long as you follow the instructions seen at http://reviews.cnet.com/4520-10165_7-5554402-1.html

With a quick web search you will run into quite a few blogs like that with various tips and tweaks for XP and even Vista. One thing about the msconfig diagnostic tool is that even if you have to boot up in safe mode for disabling the wrong item in the services group(not advised unless first checking the hide all microsoft services box) anything unchecked can be rechecked.

The services mentioned can also be restarted by typing the "services.msc" command in at the Start>Run prompt and clicking on the particular service in order to choose the disabled, manual, or automatic setting. With all that however take a look first at everything you have installed and even additional devices added to the system like a printer or other addon device. Or you may simply have seen a bad install of Windows itself if not the drivers/software for the video, sound, or addon.

4gb is a little overkill for XP to start with as well as seeing the drawback of the 32bit limitation. But simply seeing 2gb on a Vista 64 system will still see the same as with a 32bit edition.

The 2.5 minute startup time shows one of three things there as pointed at before. 1)additional device seeing a fault, 2)Windows saw an incomplete or bad install, and 3)something like drivers or one of the few programs installed went on bad being strictly a software related issue for #2 or #3.

The task now is isolating which one not rushing out for another version/edition of Windows and end up actually seeing more problems added. Plus Vista still has it's own need for fixes yet to be seen being a new version only seeing the first service pack awaiting SP2 in beta until next year.

ok this might sound wack but i just dead set forgot the address of this site for almost 2 weeks >< i was trying computer-forums etc etc no luck, never wiping my history again.

PCI - Sorry, shoudl have mentioned i have a 7200rpm sata2 drive which is about 3 or 4 months old so i dont think thats the problem, my msconfig is only the basics and i dont have any spyware or malware. I will try those manual settings though i remember a friend fiddling with them ages ago and recommending them but i had no idea where to start without a guide, cheers for that. I will try new drivers/ device configurations as well, i remember a while ago i was having problems i fixed by swapping a few things around physically, thanks for the help, sorry bout the late reply

RE: Vista 64 bit, i don't want to upgrade to it partially because nothing works and partially because i like gaming and vista chews your pc to pieces.. I don't think it boots faster either? I am yet to actually hear anything good about vista hehe except that it has DX10 (which is sweet)

Actually Vista has shown itself more reliable here then XP ever was in the shorter time it's been out. SP3 was certainly needed to correct quite a bit of things on the older version there. At first many were reluctant until spending actual time with the new version and decided to keep running it.

As for the msconfig utility the services tab is a rather sensitive area for advanced users only who know what is for what. If you end up in there for some reason first check off the "hide all microsoft services" box on the way in so that anything you decide to disable won't be system related but 3rd party items.

You can always boot up in safe mode to re-enable anything in both the services and startup sections. But the idea is not to try and fix what isn't already broken and end up gumming up the works a little. :P
