Wired and Wireless Connections

I know that wired is suppose to be faster, but today I was bored and thought I would see what the difference in speed actually was. The thing that I don't understand was that my internet speed was exactly the same on wired and wireless. I don't think this should happen and i'm wandering if something is hooked up wrong. Can anybody tell me how it's all suppose to work and be hooked up?

Depending on your internet plan it's easy to get the same results.

Wireless will look a lot worse with multiple concurrent clients simultaneously transmitting other LAN data.

Your speed might look the same, but latency's one of those things where an ethernet connection is always better.

Does the type of modem you use have an effect on your internet speeds? Like if I go out and buy a brand new modem am I gonna see faster internet speeds than what im getting with my 5 year old modem im using now?

Not really, most speeds are dictated by whatever package you have with your ISP. If you are using older equipment and aren't reaching your ISP rated speeds then an upgrade might help a lot, otherwise it's probably a waste of money.

The ISP speed tests are usually higher as you don't have to traverse other networks to reach the speed test server.

You can also estimate from your download transfer rates. If you only ever get 2 MB/sec max, that's a rough estimate of 16 mbit.

Simply. Run a speed test at www.speedtest.net and compare it to what you pay for. It sounds like you have DSL though if your ISP is Windstream, and I'm guessing your speeds will be relatively low.
